Per Jim Williams, of the Examiner.  For the uninitiated, he covers mostly media issues for the Examiner, and was out in front of other coverage of the MLB / Angelos negotiations over Nats TV rights.

Major League Baseball President Bob DuPuy said Friday MLB feels strongly it will be able to name the new owner of the Nationals on Oct. 4, the day after the end of the regular season.

MLB and financial community sources confirmed that final bids are expected from all eight prospective ownership groups by the end of this week. A stadium lease between the city and MLB will be signed within the next week and things will begin to move quickly. Those same sources say the short list is made up of groups headed by Jeff Smulyan, Fred Malek, the Lerner family and Jonathan Ledecky/George Soros.

Smulyan is attempting add William Collins, the longtime head of the Virginia Baseball Group. The Malek group is having serious conversations with former Braves President and present bidder Stan Kasten as well as Cal Ripken Jr., in an attempt to add a major inside baseball name to their group.
The Lerner family has been quiet but is also courting Kasten. The Ledecky-Soros group also has been working the phones in an attempt to find a baseball executive for their group.

The watch is on for the "big three." The Smulyan, Malek and Lerner groups are ready to dig deep into their bottomless wallets and pay between $450 and $475 million for the Nationals.

Jim Williams is a putz.

he's been running his mouth all season about his "inside info" on the Nats, Comcast, MASN, Owners, and he has YET to be RIGHT about ANYTHING.
