The race to buy the Nationals is down to three or four finalists, according to a source with knowledge of the talks. Nationals president Tony Tavares and G.M. Jim Bowden are believed to be safe if D.C. businessman Ted Lerner purchases the team. They also might be retained, at least temporarily, if the other local group, led by Fred Malek and Jeffrey Zients, assumes control. Former Braves executive Stan Kasten leads the third group, former Mariners owner Jeff Smulyan the fourth. Watch out for Kasten, whose strong group of investors is believed to include a significant African-American presence. ...
