The Tampa Bay Rays received permission from Major League Baseball's executive council to explore a plan in which they would play early-season home games in the Tampa Bay area and the remainder of the year in Montreal, sources familiar with the situation told ESPN.

Under the plan, the Rays would play in new stadiums in both the Tampa Bay area and Montreal, sources said. The number of home games each city would receive has not been determined, sources said.
Can you properly extort a city for only 41 home games?

This is the dumbest idea in a long list of dumb ideas from MLB.

So far.

Sounds like a plan to extort two cities into a new stadium duel.

The MLB executive council has given the Rays permission to explore splitting their home games between Florida and Montreal. The early season games in Florida would mean they don't need to build a stadium with a roof in Florida. The deal would include building new stadiums in each location. I would like to see it but they can't get a stadium built for all their games in Florida, there's no way they're going to get a stadium built for a partial schedule. Bronfman, the son of the original Expos owner is behind the Montreal push. A site has been selected for a stadium. I see the Rays moving to Montreal in eight years.

It'd be brutal to try to get free agents to sign with that.

Presumably this is just a prelude to the team moving to Montreal full time.

Is Olympic Stadium paid off yet?

EDIT: LOL, they paid off the debt on Olympic Stadium's construction in 2006, one year after the Expos moved out

You'd sell it at 2-3 extra months in Florida then you get to live in one of the nicest cities in North America during the summer, right when the weather in Florida starts getting oppressive. The players with kids could be based in Florida and they could stay in school for the entire year. That means the players could be with their families all of spring training (no having to leave them behind in February). The franchise is in FL, so they would be paid in US dollars.

The downsides would be that kids would have to go back to school for September, and I imagine that the tax situation in Quebec isn't great compared to no income tax Florida. But maybe they could get around it by structuring contracts with signing bonuses up front (paid in FL) and only a small amount as actual salary.

Don't get me wrong. This is an incredibly dumb idea. But it isn't awful from the player perspective.

The Rays can't draw flies so MLB has to try something other than relocating the team outright. Kudos to them for thinking outside the box.

Not the point of my rapier wit but they won't accept the Olympic joint long term.     MLB would prefer Jarry Park.

Moving Tampa to Montreal full-time would be pretty funny considering the Expos... *checks notes* lost a team 15 years ago because they couldn't get fans.

Tampa Bay never should have gotten a franchise before Washington DC, especially after a subway stop was created at the DC stadium.

Yeah, this is proof once and for all that DC should have been one of the expansion cities in the 90s.

Didn't they change the name from "Devil Rays" to appease the local snake-handling and speaking-in-tongues set?  That alone is grounds for immediate relocation.

It worked if you believe in jinx fairies.  This happened I think for the '08 season, which was the beginning of their great leap forward.
