According to a wildlife specialist I know, squirrel mating season was in April/early May, so they've been especially active in recent weeks. Might explain why you've seen a lot of them recently.
That'd explain why last year one of our friendly squirrels disappeared around Memorial Day and showed up about ten days later a lot thinner. Evidently she must have been pregnant.
