Another bullpen special.

No chance at the division.

Except for that one terrible pitch I'm fine with Suero going forward in a nightly 7th inning role based on what's available on the roster. Problem is that 8th inning role will likely continue to be musical chairs with plenty of inconsistency.

Suero is the 8th inning guy until Rizzo finds someone else.

Well we wont be winning many games then.

Rizzo's failure to build a bullpen is actually quite comical. This has been going on for 6 years now.

I just dont think it's as easy to build a pen as everyone wants to believe it is. By and large, relievers have a notoriously short shelf life.

We've given up 20 runs in the 8th inning so far. 14 games into the season.

Wow. If we had Kimbrel and Doolittle was in the 8th we would be atop the division.

Watch us lose the division at the end of the year by a few games because our pen is hot garbage.

Lights our starters. Above average lineup. But it doesn't matter because we have a pen who cannot get an out.

The assumption is that those pitchers would not have been equally as bad in another inning.

You're also assuming Kimbrel would be good

Kimbrel would have been really expensive and and he wasn't exactly stellar in the postseason last year, plus he's now on the other side of 30.

To this point - 18/30 teams have a bullpen ERA over 4 and Oakland/Toronto are close to making it 20. Only 6 teams in baseball have a pen ERA under 3 right now, and only 2/15 teams in the NL.

That said I do think Rizzo could have done better than Rosenthal and Barraclough over the winter for projected 7th and 8th inning guys.

How many of those teams have given up 20 runs in the 8th inning alone?

And how many of those teams are supposed to be contenders every single year only to have our bullpen implode time after time?

How many of those teams have a 190 million dollar payroll only to have it wasted on a bargain basement bullpen?

All that "saved" money from not signing Harper (which was a good thing), and we couldn't afford to come up with a better pen than this? Again!

Suero is a keeper, but no way is he ready for late inning prime time on a regular basis.  Rosenthal needs to figure it out quickly or it's curtains for the 2019 Nats (at which point it will be time to blow it all up, considering the competition in the NL East.)

I would love if our bullpen guys had ERAs in the 4 to 5 range. They are pathetic.

:spit:    That was pretty much our reaction at the Park on Saturday.    However, it did work out.

We'll probably trade him. That team will turn him into a stud reliever. Everyone will lament trading him

Most likely. Just like every other reliever we have let go.

Rizzo's way to build a pen. Dumpster diving.

At this point I wonder if the easiest fix would be to petition MLB to have the 8th inning removed.  We could go right from the 7th to the 9th, and then play 10 inning games.

A 9-2 lead isn't safe with this bullpen.

I have no words.
