Soto. He had a 2018 way beyond his expectations. He was not a top prospect.

Roark was acquired for 2 months of Cristian Guzman.  Mike Morse was acquired for Ryan Langerhans and then 2 seasons later got MVP votes (seriously, I think people forget that Norwegian '80s music aside, the MF could really hit).   Neither was expected to do remotely as well as he did.

I think the winner, though is this: Wilson Ramos was acquired for Matt Capps, who was out of MLB by age 30.  Six years of a starting-caliber catcher, who even made an All-Star team, for Matt Capps.  Granted, Ramos was a decent prospect, but that's still an absolute steal.

Some great examples but ... not much in the last 5 years, or longer. How did Cashman come up with Andujar? I know he's a one year star - and out for the year - but that 2018 season with the bat was phenomenal.

I think Morse was our best "steal." We just need more like him.

They signed him out of the Dominican.  Signing 16-year-olds sometimes produces guys who boom spectacularly (Soto, last year) or those who bust spectacularly (Anderson Franco).  That's a completely different story than trades for retreads or marginal prospects in their 20s, which have been largely absent for 5 years because the Nats fancied themselves contenders in that time.

Sometimes, as we all know though, those retreads and/or marginal prospects turn out to be more productive than the signing of a player costing exponentially more. NYY, who always are contenders, seem able due to their wealth to stockpile a lot of these type players in the minors to provide quality depth as needed.

The fact that Mike Rizzo built his bullpen around the idea that Matt Grace, Kyle Barraclough, Trevor Rosenthal and Justin Miller would be your work horses is a fireable offense IMO. Martinez may not be a good manager but it is undeniable that Rizzo has completely botched the last 18 months.

Yeah I don't understand the blind assumption that he will be bad. High 90s stuff, great K/9 ratio at every level including his stint in AAA this year. Why can't he be good? Walks too many people right now, but that can change.
