Made me think of Willie Mays and Henry Aaron. Willie will be 88 this Spring and Hank just turned 85 this week.

Frank was an undeniable superstar player and had a couple very good years managing. One of the players in baseball I truly would've wanted to meet and have a beer with.

I agree. Would've had a shot at being a great, not just good, manager if he had managed in the days before the players had the upper hand. Too "old school" for the free agency era.

Or if he had ever gotten a good team. Imagine what he could have done if he had a team like Aaron Boone or Alex Cora or even Davey Martinez had dropped in their laps this year.

He obviously couldn’t be too picky about jobs given the social situation, unfortunately.

The world doesn't produce men like Frank Robinson anymore. A shame.

Was he the last player manager in MLB?

The most recent player-manager in MLB was Pete Rose, who, upon being traded from the Montreal Expos to the Cincinnati Reds in August 1984, was immediately named the Reds' manager. Rose managed and served as a backup infielder until the end of the 1986 season, when he retired as a player.

Rose and Robinson were team mates in Cincy in the early 60s.

Pete was able to manage, play and gamble heavily. Impressive.

As an old Bucs fan, I "hated" Cincy.     Vada Pinson was a close third on the list behind Robinson and Rose.     :)     I had forgiven old transgressions of the Reds when the Bucs got Smokey Burgess, Don Hoak and Harvey Haddix from them for the run in '60.     Liked Big Klu also but he didn't stay in Pittsburgh long.     Rose, Pinson and Robinson rekindled the dislike.    We won't even mention the "hatred" of the Big Red Machine in the 70s.

And only two announcers. One doing radio and the other tv. Mid game they would switch seats.
