2 year deal tells me they see him as the #1. That he's catching ~100 games a year says they need a solid backup. Maybe bring Wieters back on a 1 year deal?
OK strategy. As long as the backup can handle the staff and be more than an automatic out Maybe Wieters will take a big pay cut and ego hit.
WELCOME TO THE KURT LOCKER MOTHERfreakERS!!!!!
Wieters is a minor league / spring training invitee at this point.
This sounds more like a backup signing. I also wouldn't count out Suzuki backing up Zim at 1B.
This is McLouth money - 2 years, $10MM. Still doesn't preclude playing for grandal or maybe dealing for Sal (my wish).
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that Jeff Mathis' two-year contract with the Rangers is worth $6.25 million.Mathis is a career .198/.258/.306 hitter and will turn 36 next March but is set for new career highs in earnings the next two seasons. His deal with Texas is not yet official, as the Rangers could be waiting until after the Rule 5 deadline Tuesday.
It does if you want the team to buy a second baseman and some starting pitching
So the Nats would sign Yasmani Grandal, a man who within the last few years has finished 22nd in MVP voting, and sit him half the time for Kurt Suzuki?
Anyone thinking that 35 year old Kurt Suzuki is going to catch half the games is kidding themselves. He signed for backup money. I expect him to be the backup.
He caught 105 games.
My bride is mildly t'd off...I bought her a Zuk #24 jersey in his first tour of duty...he's gonna wear #28 this time around...
I thought it was Kirk.
