Kurt Suzuki 2018:  .271 / .332 / .444 - 12 HRs, caught 105 games.

Will be really interesting to see what they do for a backup.  My guess is it's Kieboom, on the idea that Reed will be ready at some point this year.

Suzuki at his age is your backup catcher, and a very good one. Now, go out and sign your #1.

2 year deal tells me they see him as the #1.  That he's catching ~100 games a year says they need a solid backup.  Maybe bring Wieters back on a 1 year deal?

He appeared in 105 games. He averaged catching 85 games over the last two years. He will split duties with one of the younger guys.

Please no Wieters. Let him go back to the Baltimorons.

Kurt Suzuki deal with #Nationals is two years, $10M, sources say - $4M in 2019, $6M in 2020. Agreement first reported by @Feinsand.

-Ken Rosenthal

That's really cheap. Great deal for Riz

I think he may simply be a 1A, but who will we pair with him to start another 60-80 games?  I'm not sure I'm sold on our younger guys filling that role.  Maybe we do bring Wieters back on the cheap?  Obviously the major guys out there like Realmuto/Grandal/Ramos are now off the board.  Either way, we will be much better offensively at the position unless Suzuki just falls off a cliff due to Father Time.

Yes but I gotta wonder if his sudden power was due to PEDs

Don't forget one year they signed Derek Norris early then brought in Wieters and moved Norris.  I don't see this as precluding a move for Realmuto or Grandal.  It just allows them to walk from a Realmuto deal if the price is too high, and leaves them with a solid alternative if they get beat out for Grandal.  Heck, you could even see them bring in Ramos to pair with Suzuki if the price is right.  Meanwhile, you have  vet to pair with Reed if he turns out to be the real deal.

I like this alot more than giving 18 million a year to Grandal.

That said I don't think there is any way he is our primary catcher. At the plate he rarely strikes out but behind it he is below average at framing pitches and throwing out batters.

Someone like Martin Maldonado who is one of the best defensive catchers in the game would be a good addition to platoon with Suzuki.

I can't see it making sense to sign Ramos, maybe if he was a LHB who could play some first.
