Let that sink in.

They're getting Yan Gomes and Kurt Suzuki for what they paid for Wieters last season

Kinda felt Suzuki wasn't gonna be the #1 Catcher at his age. Gomes, though four years younger, is no spring chicken at 31. Good enough combo if Realmuto was a bridge too far.

his bat disappeared for several years but came back big time last year.  For trivia fans, I think he was the first native Brazilian in MLB.  D is pretty good, but Perez was always supposed to be better. Makes the Mejia trade a bit painful.

With Gomes  and Suzuki, I think they sit tight on 2d base and hope someone falls to them in February.  They can afford to play Difo / Sanchez / Kendrick until Kieboom is ready.
.762 OPS is not exactly big time but better than Wieters.

Bring on the brazilian girls.

Talk Nats has a source that is claiming that the Gomes deal was done in part to make the Nats more attractive for free agent pitchers (to which I replied that apparently free agent pitchers don't care who is managing the team).

With a Brazilian and Hawaiian in the house, sun screen sales at the Park should be off the charts next season...

Less, because the early years on Gomes' contract were so low his AAV cap hit is only $3.8, practically free.

Not what sportrac says, but whatever.

Both would improve Wieters performance at the plate, as well as pitch framing.

SportTrac has $3.833 AAV, same as COTS.

Yan Gomes signed a 6 year / $23,000,000 contract with the Cleveland Indians, including a $500,000 signing bonus, $23,000,000 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $3,833,333. In 2019, Gomes will earn a base salary of $7,000,000, while carrying a total salary of $7,083,333.

Base salary means nothing, that's just what the team pays, the AAV is the only thing that matters.

Amen. We're not going to have 2 catchers with multi million dollar contracts.

Yeah nothing to complain about in that trade. Likely middle RP/swingman and a 4th/5th OF for a decent, cheap player at a need position? I’ll take it. Most importantly it should put us within about a win or a win and a half of Realmuto for the next two years while giving up players of far less consequence.

That's a heck of a trade, honestly.  Just need to go sign a pile of AAAA starters now to fill the Rodriguez lottery ticket role over the next couple years.

Am I the only one who thinks that Rodriguez might turn into a Vasquez or Pivetta?

Those two names are completely different.  Vasquez was someone who'd had a shot in the majors and been middling at best, someone who threw a million miles per hour but couldn't seem to put it together despite the Nats cleaning up his delivery to about the simplest thing you can imagine.  When you need a closer and that's what you need to trade, the small risk of it coming up aces for Pittsburgh is an acceptable risk.  He wasn't going to do it in DC; they'd already tried everything.

Pivetta was a classic mid-level prospect who turned out decent but hadn't had a chance in DC.  No problem there except what he was traded for.

Rodriguez is somewhere between the two, but even if he turns out ok, it's not like the Nats didn't give him a shot.  Good arm, but I'm not that worried about him really burning the Nats, partly because Gomes has a lot more team control than Melancon or Papelbon did, and more left in the tank than the latter.

Cervelli and Suzuki? Just need a German and it's WWII all over again.

And we have Rizzo to complete the Axis Alliance

Rizzo was quoted today saying the organization saw J.R. as a long arm in the pen.

I still think he has a future in the rotation. I’m sure Rizzo knows best.
