Interesting. Gonna open up the market for him. Gotta think we inquire here.

gonna guess Kimbrel takes his.  $17.9MM is pretty good AAV for a closer coming off a year with some shaky stretches.

Yeah, but a one-year deal for a 30-year-old reliever with a fantastic resume and a lot of mileage on his arm is probably not what that reliever wants.  If they would have offered 3 years at that AAV, I'd imagine he'd have signed an extension.

Baseball is a little sadder place today with the retirement of Adrian Beltre.

A top 10 on MLB.com

Next stop, Cooperstown, where I hope Elvis Andrus sneaks up during his speech and rubs him on his head.

Comargo had a decent OPS last year.  Doesn't make sense to me unless they are moving Comargo to the OF to take Markakis place.

Once they take him for a cheese steak with Mike Trout he will be in the bag.

This I don't get. He's going to be 33 in a week so even if he has a monster season next year who is going to offer a 34 year old guy a huge multi year contract?

The Mets?

I don’t understand why they want Cano? I know they are getting a young reliever but that seems the least of their problems.

Cano can still hit, he's a big name, and the Mets have giant holes at any position he could conceivably play.  I'll wait to see what the money terms of the deal are because none of that justifies paying the last 3 seasons of his contract, when he probably won't be able to hit, won't be able to play anywhere but first, and his contract won't be balanced out by getting Diaz for very little money, but it makes some sense in the short run.  What doesn't make sense is a short-term deal by a team with huge long term risk by a team that has little chance to compete in the next year or two without huge upgrades elsewhere - which they don't have the trade chips for and won't have the salary space for if they need to pay Cano most of his money down the line.

But, as you implied, "Because Mets" is a complete explanation for many stupid general manager decisions.

Diaz is really good but adding a stud closer to a turd team is just a weird move. I guess they're banking on Cano helping keep them legitimate in the meantime. He can still hit but I wonder how much cash Seattle pays down.

Also after 2019 Diaz hits arbitration so he'll be expensive. I wonder what the Mets' long game is here as apparently Syndegaard is gone too.

Maybe they want to flip him at the deadline? Same for Cano.

First off, with that rotation, the Mets have just as good a shot as anyone in this division. They were a -31 run differential on the season. Wheeler and Matz pitched well and Syndergaard gave 25 starts of ace level performance.

Get Cespedes back, combine him with Conforto, Cano, and a full season of McNeil and Rosario, and the Mets offense is probably improved. This a Mets team that could win 85+ games if it stays healthy.

And if doesn't Diaz alone will recoup (and probably improve) the prospects they gave up.

Billy Hamilton got non-tendered. Wouldn't mind that speed/defense. I wonder if he could play enough SS/2B to be a super-utility man.

There is zero chance of that.  He played SS in the minors and was absolutely terrible at it (like, 30+ errors in 125 games terrible), which was how he ended up in the outfield.

Probably true. Maybe just 2B. It’s a pipe dream he’s probably OF for life.
