Good offseason gets better. They're stockpiling some back of the rotation depth after it bit them a few times past few years.

Not sure why people are confused about the Nats going to arbitration over $250k. If the Nats told him, "Our best offer is ____" and then he set his number above that then they have to go to arbitration. Nationals won. I like Taylor, but I'm sick of waiting for his permanent breakout.

MAT is a "toolsy" guy that just may never breakout, or maybe given the opportunity, he could still do it late in his career.  Pham was a similarly "toolsy" OF that brokeout in 2017 even older than MAT is.  Different circumstances.  I just don't see it happening in DC.  We'll keep him as a 4th OF unless someone offers a trade that is worth more than he is in that 4th OF role.  I tend to believe he plays out the year as a reserve in DC.  If we bring Harper back, I still think he stays as 4th OF and Eaton is the guy to be dealt.

Where do you draw the line if that is always the policy to just give the player what they want?  If you'll do it for 250K, then why wouldn't you for another 250K for 500K total?  And so on and so forth.

I don’t know what the line is, but there definitely is one. I know I wouldn’t walk away from a house over $1000 bucks or a car over $50.  But I would over $20,000 and $1000 respectively.

He got what, 3+million?  250K is a significant portion of that.  You can't just give that large a percentage extra to all your arbitration guys because what the heck.  The numbers are crunched very precisely based on performance and comparative players in the same position and year of arbitration historically.  It doesn't come off the top of their head, and 250K is significant.

The thing is though, if it's a guy you want to keep around, and keep happy, you avoid arbitration and work out a compromise in the first place. If you don't give a rat's ass about the player's morale or happiness with the management, you go to arb. I mean, they basically have to sit and list all the reasons they feel MAT isn't as good or valuable as he says he is. Listening to your boss trash your performance for a few hours straight - and then winning - does NOT make a person happy.

IMO the Nats sent a message to Taylor to put up or shut up by going to arb over 250k.

Didn't someone just say split the difference and shake on it?  So it should have only been 125,000 given by each side.  The arbitration process probably cost more than that.

Put up or shut up, but even if you put up, you're probably not going to be more than a 4th outfielder  :)

Who knows, maybe he didn’t budge because he was already pissed because of how Davey used him last year.

And this makes even less sense with Barraclough. Bring a guy in to play a big role and the teams first offcial action is to play hardball for every last dollar. Sometimes I wonder if these guys understand baseball, but not human interaction.

I want to say the Nats had a habit of going to arbitration WAY higher than most teams back in the 2008-2012 years, then seemed to reach more settlements up until this year. Not sure where to look it up and I don't have the time to dig; if anyone knows how to find it, can you post their arby numbers for the last decade?

I know how it works.  I've helped a MLB agent on arbitration filings.  As I said before, yea they don't go to arbitration over 250K if MAT is expected to be a cornerstone.  He's not.

If we’re not getting Harper, how about Kimbrel?

He's entered the Papelbon phase of his career -- the part after Pap left the Sox. Meaning big pay, rapidly diminishing results. We need what all teams value, a closer who you have confidence in when he takes the mound in the 9th. That really hasn't been Kimbrel for awhile now.

They will have to spray the entire stadium with deodorant whenever he pitches.

The Giants have acquired right-hander Trevor Gott from the Nationals in exchange for cash considerations. Johnny Cueto was moved to the 60-day DL to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.

Giants beat writer.
