Difo has little to no trade value. He's not really a good player. No-bat, all-glove backups are available anywhere. He has more value to us than in any trade.

lol @ at the idea Eaton & Difo get you Kluber.

I'm looking at the stats of Josh Harrison, Ian Kinsler and Brian Dozier and they aren't much better than Difo.

LeMahieu might be the best 2B available but Marwin Gonzalez isn't far off and can play SS, 1B and LF. I'm not sure how Gonzalez is at 2B though.

Yea, I mean in some super minor deal for a C prospect or as a throw in a team might take Difo, but he's basically equal to a minor league free agent.  He's no longer a prospect.  We need somebody that can play SS besides Turner on the active roster, so Difo is worth something to us.

So if the Nats sign a 2B that they see as an upgrade over Kendrick and/or Difo, do you still think they keep Difo because they need a back up SS?  I mean, I get that, but if that's the case, do they even have a roster spot for this new starting 2B?

Yes, there is a roster spot for a starting second baseman.  There are several available and one of those guys WILL BE on the 2019 roster.

5 bench -- Difo, Kendrick, Adams, Suzuki, MAT.
8 starting position players -- Eaton, Robles, Soto, Rendon, Turner, FA second baseman (TBD), Zim, Gomes.
12 pitchers -- Max, Stras, Corbin, Sanchez, Ross, Doolittle, Rosenthal, Barraclough, and four more (TBD)

I’d like another left handed bat. If Adams starts then the only lefty pinch hitting option is Difo, which isn’t ideal.

Stevenson is another LH bench bat after we sign Harper and trade Eaton. :couch:

I agree with Zuck on second base. Difo didn't rise to the occasion and Kieboom is too far away to pencil in. I hate the second base market, especially since I don't see Rockies letting LeMahieu walk. I would like to see the Nationals offer Brian Dozier a "get right" contract.  The market is terrible and a year from today they can either try to go long term with him or reevaluate with another year of monitoring in house options.

At catcher, they have to let Wieters walk unless he wants to stay as a backup for a very low dollar amount. I don't get chuffed about catchers. Not many teams invest highly in them and end up happy. I would like a reunion with Ramos. Lucroy wouldn't be so bad.

I'd like to resign Matt Adams and declare he and Zim a platoon from day one. Those guys platoon splits are massive. Zimmerman absolutely crushes lefties, Adams destroys righties. Adams would also be good insurance in the OF if there was some injuries.

Rizzo is having a pretty good (and busy) off-season:
1. Traded for Gomes
2. Signed Suzuki
3. Signed Rosenthal
4. Traded for Bearclaw / Barraclough
5. Signed Corbin
6. Signed Dozier
7. Didn't bring back Gio
8. Signed Adams

Am I missing anything?

Signed Anibal Sanchez. But he still needs to sign one more starting pitcher.

We've really hit my entire wish list this offseason, not that my wish list was a priority for Rizzo haha.  I wanted Corbin as a big-time free agent lefty to add to the rotation.  I wanted Dozier as a 1-year 2B deal.  I didn't have specific names in mind, but I'm happy with how catcher was addressed.  Same for the bullpen with Rosenthal and Bear Claw.  Adams was the lefty Zimmerman platoon guy I wanted.  Now just sign Harper and get value for Eaton and I'm thrilled.

Nats avoid arbitration with Joe Ross, reports are it's a $1 million deal.

The other arb-eligible players are:

Rendon
MAT
Barraclough
Turner

Baseball reference also lists Henderson Alvarez and Josh Edgin as arbitration-eligible

For the price the Brewers got Grandal, should the Nats have gone for him over what we got? I think probably not

I like having 2 catchers I wouldn't mind being the #1 guy for a period of time if the other goes down.  If you just sign Grandal, then you're 1 injury away from Kieboom or Severino as your starter.

Source with knowledge of the situation: The Nationals do plan to settle with third baseman Anthony Rendon today.

So I'd guess that means a 1 year deal, which doesn't necessarily preclude an extension.

They probably want to figure out the Harper situation first.

Agreement reached with Rendon but no details yet. No agreement with Taylor or Bearclaw

Update: $18.8 million.
