I'd really, really, really like us to sign Adam Warren. Reliable, multi-inning RHP who is way more of a sure thing in middle relief than the guys we have now.

With bonuses, if fully earned to the degree possible, the Nats will go over the salary cap again this season.  I don't see us expanding the roster with anyone of note without dumping some salary already on the books.

Don't we have roughly ~10 million left to spend? I guess the bonuses have to be accounted for, but if we're already over by a couple million, what is a couple more for huge roster improvements?

Personally I'd move MAT this spring to a rebuilding team where he can start and use his $2 million to sign Warren to a 1-year deal and try to sign Adam Jones as our backup/part-time CF. :stir:

We aren't over yet, but if Max or Corbin win the Cy Young, and a number of other factors all align perfectly, we'll be over for the 3rd year in a row.  I doubt they want to chance that...

MAT is being paid $3.25MM this season...

Also, it would be good to have some room to add players at the deadline.

Jesus Fing Christ. Heaven forbid someone wins a Cy Young and we have to pay a luxury tax.

I’m actually excited to see what this team can do. And I’m one of those that thinks that Harper had a negative effect on the clubhouse and I’m hopeful that will manifest itself on the field.

As usual, you missed the point...

If you typically write something and people usually miss the point, then you should check yourself.

If your point was paying the luxury tax number because they were over three straight years, they offered someone a $300M contract two months ago. They aren't hurting for money.

They offered the money to Royce before they spent it on others.

My point was exactly that...they don't want to exceed the cap.  Congrat's...it only took you 2 tries this time...

Reported. I got it the first time but still think your point is invalid.

I think the rules say something about attacking other posters.

BTW, given you're a bandwagon fan- looking forward to seeing you on the Phillies forums soon.

I wouldn't be surprised to see MAT moved, but probably not until mid-season.  They'll use him either to manipulate Robles' service time or as an insurance policy against Robles totally sucking.  I'm not in favor of Jones as a backup OF unless you have someone else who can actually play a credible CF.  Jones can't really anymore, regardless of how awesome he was there 5 years ago.  Neither can Eaton.  That basically leaves you Robles and MAT as the only two options for someone who won't kill you either on offense or defense.   Assuming the intention is to actually compete this year, both MAT and Robles need to stay in the organization unless someone who can play CF and hit enough to not be an automatic out comes along.

I saw an article from a SF site yesterday suggesting that SF would be a good trading partner for us around a deal in which we'd send MAT to them, and they'd send us one of their spare LHPs.  I think Will Smith is in his final year, but it would take more than MAT to get him.

I don't know about that.  The Giants already have a young CF who is above-average on defense and doesn't hit enough to play in the corners.  It'd surprise me, but I agree with you on where to look with the likely return.   I think there are better fits elsewhere.

What do you expect? I'm 35k ft up in the air. Took a special piss in the lavatory for VA, but I think I'm too far north for it to get his way.

At least they can't both win the Cy Young.
