Are you too old to be an MLB player?
« Topic Start: August 23, 2018, 12:38:01 PM »
This is a pretty interesting site. It tells you if anyone in MLB is older than you, and if not, lists the last player to play in the Major leagues that was older than you when they played.

They also list the first player in the major leagues to be younger than you. So for instance Adrian Beltre debuted when he was 19 in 1998 making him the first player younger than me at the time. Bartolo Colon is the oldest player older than me playing.

Albert Pujols was the first player younger than me to debut. Jesus that makes me feel old.

well, I'm pretty sure either Satchel Paige or Minnie Minoso are the only ones older than me.  As for younger, I think, without looking it up, it was Mike Morgan.  He was in high school with a guy a class behind me in college and went from high school to the pros.

Edit - looked it up.  Misunderstood it.  The last player older than me to play was Julio Franco.  I was onto something about a high schooler making it straight to the majors being the one who would have been younger than me, but it turns out to be Brian Greer, who was born on May 14, 1959 and made the majors in 9/77.

It’s not the player that’s older than you are now, it the oldest player who was older than you at the time. I
Imagine satchel Paige wasn’t playing when folks on here were in their 50s

the last player older than you as of the day he retired.  Franco retired many years ago, at 49, and he was the last player who was still older than me as of the day he retired.

Bryce Harper and I are roughly the same age. I thought he was a lot older.  :hysterical:

This is not where I was hoping this thread would go...
I'm too old to be a MLB player.  And I lack the skill which is why I didn't do it earlier.

when I was younger I figured that all I had to do was to figure out how to either throw a baseball very fast with accuracy, or hit a very fast baseball, and then I could play in the majors.  Alas no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't figure it out (which really pissed me off since my parents and teachers told me I could be anything I wanted to be as long as I worked hard).

So, now I'm nearly 50 and older than all major leaguers, and have never realized my dream, though I did hit a walk-off base hit in a men's softball league a few years ago.

No gatorade bucket, but it felt good, line drive over the pitcher’s head.

That's still more than most have done.

I can imagine that happening in my head, and it's so, so satisfying.
