from mlb.com transacation page for August 5th

"Washington Nationals
Announced RHP Sun-Woo Kim was claimed off waivers by the Colorado Rockies"

I suspect  a trade was in the works and Colorado claimed him to block it...

Who was going to trade for Kim?  They had to activate Blanco or lose him and Kim was the odd man out.

quote Jim Bowden..[hyperlink at bottom]

"Blanco had to come back and he had to be reinstated, so you have to make a roster spot," said interim general manager Jim Bowden. "Unfortunately, when players [like Kim] are out of options, you have to ask for waivers and outright them. That's part of the game. That's why they have the system for players to get the opportunities. You have to make the best decision and keep the best 11 pitchers."

Was this discussed during Friday's TV broadcast at all?   I was travelling and only caught the last few miserable innings.  OK, so Blanco is a Rule 5 draftee and must remain on the major league roster or DL or Cincinnati has rights to reacquire him.    So a roster spot had to be freed up.   Hey Bowden, how about putting one of the walking wounded like Vidro or Castilla (who Blanco will play for) on the DL?  To lose Kim for nothing after already letting Ohka go for beans, and trading Day for Wilson who will be gone next year is just plain bad GM'ing.

Why not send down Cepicky?

Yes I heard it on both tv and radio but there wasn't alot of discussion.  Just an announcement that it had happened.

Thank you, Montco.

PC, I also thought Cepicky would be the obvious choice to demote to AAA.

Bowden referrred to being "out of options" on Kim.   Perhaps, Cepicky was also out of options and the Nats did not want to risk losing him via a waiver claim.

This page explains some things, but leaves many unanswered questions.

This is particularly bad in light of the fact that Armas left his last start with an arm injury and the way Hernandez has pitched since the All Star break.

We, really, couldn't afford to lose a pitcher.

Sunny Kim started today for the Rockies.  He pitched 4 innings, gave up 5 hits, 2 earned runs and had 4K's.

That's better than Hernandez's last start.  And Kim was pitching at Coors Field.

How many times can I say it.  Pitching is not our problem.

But we didn't have to give him up for nothing.
