The problem is that all of his stats are front-loaded from his terrific April.  It's been 2+ months of flounder, head bob, jitter in the box, since then.

Maybe instead of a Bryce Harper bobble head doll night they should do the Bryce Harper flounder, head bob, jitter in the box and flying shoulder doll night.

What, you mean that hitting .196/.336/.429 isn't what we were expecting?

We're not supposed to refer to batting averages...it's been deemed a bad stat...

I took it more at face value.  In 2009, we could be 25 games below .500 and I would watch the next game intently and feel good if we won.  Doesn't mean I wish it was 2009 again.

Exactly

Wait, you mean a 104 wRC+ wasn't what you were expecting?

Is wRC+ an abbreviation for pitcher wins?

Because of BAPIP.

As long as it's spring loaded with a bat and jack a ball half way to the Anacostia.

That'd be a deep, titanic foul ball. :)

Because of BAPIP.

Tom Boswell insists that Harper will terrify opponents as soon as his BAPIP rises to .300, and since a BAPIP under .300 is just a blip... He taught us that when Danny Espinosa was hitting .230.

Which won't happen until he starts adjusting to the shift, which he won't do.

I'm calling it right now, Syndergaard is coming in high and tight on Soto tonight.

Phils and Braves both lose and Nats fail to gain ground.

Nats 2017 runs per game: 5.02
Nats 2018 runs per game: 4.33

Nats 2017 earned runs against per game: 3.81
Nats 2018 earned runs against per game:3.88

Pitching has been spotty but not much different than last year. It's the lack of hitting that has killed them this year.

The frustrating part is in the playoffs a good bullpen can carry a team a long way. Good bullpens were a tremendous advantage to Kansas City and Cleveland in the playoffs in the last few years. This year the Nats bullpen has the potential to make the difference if they made the playoffs. If Kinzler, Madson, Herrera, Doolittle hit their stride they would be awesome. Even Kelly has straightened his game out and Grace has been doing well. Oh well.

5.5 back at the break.

So much for my prediction of this team winning 100 games

Yep, can't undo that, though. Gotta chip away. Have to start working the way back from where they are, not where they were. If they can find a way to make up a game and half every 11 games like they just did, they'll win the division by 3 games.

Also, with 15 games left vs. ATL and PHI, those become massively important. They haven't always shown the urgency they need to in those situations. That's gonna need to change in the 2nd half.
