Let's Remember Some Guys: Nats Edition
« Topic Start: February 13, 2018, 12:29:20 PM »
Deadspin does a post every now and then where they post "Let's Remember Some Guys" and post a list of random players who we may have forgotten. I thought it'd be fun to remember some guys from Nats history because we have had our share of random guys come play in DC. I'll start it off:

Remember Mike O'Connor?

The Nats had this reliever here a few years back, funny guy, real intense, a fighter, got him in a mid year trade from Philly, then he got over used by Baker and didn't last the next year. Trying to remember his name.

Brian Bixler
During that magical 2011 season, anytime you saw Brian Bixler enter a game, you knew he would soon be standing on second base. Ah, the simple days when this team had the luxury of carrying a full time pinch runner.

Xavier Nady
I went to a Nats/Padres game in the spring of 2012. A man sitting near me brought a sign that said "X-MAN" on it and proudly displayed it whenever Xavier Nady came to bat. Late in the game, with the Nats losing by 1, Nady stepped to the plate. Terrance (remember Terrance?) went into the crowd, took the X-MAN sign from the fan, and marched up and down the dugout carrying this sign. Wouldn't you know, Xavier Nady hit a game-tying home run and the Nats went on to win the game. All I could think was "why did that man bring an Xavier Nady sign to the game"

(Of course I once brought a Jesus Flores sign to a game)

I was a big fan of Nady when he first came up with the Mets.  He was great that first year and I hoped we could somehow acquire him.  Maybe that guy felt the same.

Had a discussion last night about Tex (and Chief) with a bartender at CCSP.  The bullpen hung out with the bullpen coach at CCSP in 2005.  I hate to say it, but she was in her mid-20s at the time and was sort of a peer so they would go to clubs, too.

Mike O'Connor pitched the first New Nats game I saw. June 18, 2006, a hot day game. Daughter had given me an autographed Mitchell & Ness replica 1959-1960 home jersey, number 3. Yes, Killebrew's number and autograph. I had sworn not to wear it until we got a team back in Washington.

That day, Harmon came with me to the upper deck, RF in RFK / DC Stadium, a place I'd never been and had never seen anyone sit except for Opening Day.

Tight game, O'Connor against Chien Ming Wang. Yankees took the lead in the eight off Gary Majewski. With one out in the bottom of the 9th, someone named Marlon Anderson got a hit, and then Harmon Killebrew came back: 23 year old bonus baby, finally a major leaguer, 3B for the 1959 Nats, co-HR champ of the AL. New Nats young 3B, Ryan Zimmerman homers for the win.

I thought Zimmerman would be something special, and maybe O'Connor, too. So...

I was at that game also; Yankees fans were salty in the parking lot.  Someone got on one of them and he started yelling "how many rings do you have?"  Cracked me up--do fans get the rings also?

The army of crappy starting pitcher non-prospects from 2010-2011-ish. JD Martin, Garrett Mock, Shairon Martis, Collin Balester, and Luis Atilano.

Justin Maxwell. The man of a thousand (well, multiple) chances to play regularly.  Looked like a ballplayer but ... proved time and again, looks really aren't everything.

Brett Carroll and Cesar Izturis played on the 2012 squad. Remember Eury Perez? Dougie Slaten who let all inherited runners score?!

Such painful memories.

How about Nyjer Morgan? We all recall him thinking Adam Jones' ball had gone off his glove over the fence for a HR (when it had not). Then, Nyjer throwing his glove down in disgust while Jones circled the sacks for an inside-the-park HR. Other than that, I really liked Nyjer. He had tools!

Then there was Lastings Milledge. Did not like his game. When we discuss Soto and Robles as untouchables, we oughta keep Lastings in mind. He was once their peer, or close to being that, in the Mets system.
