The weird thing is, that is apparently a super routine shot. It was set up by a big error by the Swedes. Not to say it wasn’t impressive. A five point end has only been topped once in Olympic History. I was watching live and it was clear that shot ended the match for all practical purposes.
The other reason it was a big deal is that in Vancouver or Sochi, he probably would have missed that shot just because he seemed to be snakebitten. This year his luck finally turned.
I was thinking today that Shuster is sort of like Don Larsen. Shuster took a lot of crap after Sochi, but he'll be remembered (rightly so) for this year. Larsen went 3–21 for the 1954 Orioles, but nobody remembers that because of a certain game against Brooklyn in the 1956 World Series.
