According to nightingale, which is always a crapshoot, we are nearing a 2-year  $7m deal with Kendrick

I never considered the Nats could plan on retaining Kendrick

Even with a  step back toward career norms, he is the right handed bat we need on the bench.

It's important  to have good backups when the majority  of your team is injury prone

Guessing Howie gets some starts at 2b while Murphy is out.

Yeah, or LF if Eaton isn't 100%.  he really gives us a ton of versatility.

Kendrick's not gonna repeat his amazing 2017 season but is probably worth it at that price. I thought he would be gone for sure, this new FA market is nuts.

Janes says: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/nationals-journal/wp/2018/01/15/nationals-re-sign-howie-kendrick-to-two-year-deal-checking-another-box-on-their-list/?hpid=hp_regional-hp-cards_rhp-card-sports%3Ahomepage%2Fcard

As the rest of the league waits around for a sluggish free agent market, the Nationals have made pointed strikes. They can now wait in the weeds to strike at a bargain or two, if the market creates them, knowing they have already solidified their bullpen and bench.

Ideally, they will still upgrade behind the plate. Likely, they will still hunt a fifth starter. They will also need to sign more relievers, something they often do late in the winter, hoping someone will rise out of a large spring training arms crop. Most of those things can happen late in the winter, particularly as the biggest-name free agents have yet to move.

We are hearing that Howie Kendrick was offered more money from other teams but really wanted to come back to the Washington Nationals. Unfinished business.

Saw some tweets saying Kendrick took less money to stay here than he was offered to play elsewhere.

But  "plays the game the right way" is more cliche' than "I like the way he plays the game" so that's the one I remember.  Or put another way:  I might say "I like the way he plays the game" but I would never say something as stupid as "he plays the game the right way".
