I'd be fine with my school cheating it's way to a title even if it meant vacating it years later

Every time a kid decides to attend a school that isn't the obvious choice (i.e. kentucky if they're headed pro after a year, duke or stanford if they probably won't go pro, or something that makes sense geographically), I just assume money changed hands- there's no reason not to

Man, I thought I was jaded.

Why is the FBI even investigating this?

Probably for tax evasion (that and mail fraud have always been the fallback charges if the feds can't get anything more substantive; also a few of the late-night talk-show hosts on FM-106.7 seem to feel that it's tax evasion they're after).

Will they get knocked out in the first or second round of the NCAA? I need to know for my brackets.

It's my reading that it kind of got dumped on them.    Plus, what OC wrote  ...  interstate   ....   money  ....   taxes.

Arizona, Duke and other big name schools are named in the probe. It's not just guys showing up at non basketball schools such as Washington or Missouri. The big schools are all trying to outbid each other. And this is just one agent. Does anyone think that was the only firm doing it?

Much of the problem seems to be with the one and done guys. There is absolutely no reason to bring a guy to school for one semester so he can play basketball. They sign up for the spring semester and then never go to class. Just let them go to the NBA or other pro leagues. I know the NBA doesn't want that but it's just too bad. Will make the G League more interesting.

I will never understand why the kids don't just pay taxes on it. Against NCAA rules isn't against the law and the NCAA doesn't have subpoena powers to get tax returns. Agents could be giving these kids W2s and the NCAA would have no clue

Most of them don't come from upper middle class families where they are knowledgable of tax law. They don't think they will get caught. Not many do.

the agents and the shoe companies should know better. If they had been sending out W2s, there's nothing for the FBI to investigate, just a private association having its rules violated

But it doesn’t seem they are going after individual players. They are going after programs. That’s why this makes no sense. I don’t think the federal government should be enforcing NCAA rules. Especially since those rules are dumb.

I think large publicly traded corporations paying out money without accounting for it is something for the Feds to investigate (they're required by law to issue W2s or 1099s); I just don't understand why they didn't give out the documents, if they don't want their names tied to it, have a subsidiary create a subsidiary in the Caymans and have that subsidiary create another one to pay the kids; they NCAA could never trace it, but if the IRS;SEC;FBI came knocking, they'd be in the clear

Well, many of the big conference schools are public institutions, so there's the whole lying / integrity / honesty to tax payers.  There's also the schools that don't cheat that want a fair playing field.  Again, if you have honest state schools, then there's harm to their supporters by having others compete in violation of the rules and the supervising entity (the NCAA) deliberately winking.  Tax issues, publicly traded companies not disclosing where the money is going, violation of lender covenants for audited entities, etc...  on the financial side, fraud, fiduciary duties, ... you could go on and on about the laws potentially violated.  Also, the military academies are NCAA members, so if the NCAA is systematically not enforcing its rules against the glamour programs, then perhaps there's harm to the academies.

the academies pay players and guarantee post graduate employment, so if the NCAA enforced its rules universally and fairly, they'd be barred from participating

And so it begins - Big South Tournament now underway!

Gotta love small conference basketball - Radford playing Longwood right now in front of an empty arena at UNC Asheville.

Radford(2) really struggling against Longwood (10).  Longwood by 2 with 7 minutes to go.

Radford advances!  59-53.  Their rookie point guard decided to start shooting.

Sean Miller "vehemently denies" reports that he arranged payment to player.   It would be bold to deny something that you know to exist on tape.
