Golf 2018
« Topic Start: January 04, 2018, 10:19:44 AM »
New year, new thread  ....

The PGA boyz are in Hawaii today.     On another point, they closed the local public course today.    I had a 10:06 tee time.    How the hell am I supposed to practice for nuclear winter if I can't play in this little bit of snow?

Congrats, your prayers to the little baby Jesus were answered.

Not sure what that's supposed to mean but I gotta admit I peaked outside to make sure it wasn't the nuclear winter part.

My bad, I inadvertently deleted the text of your quote that I was replying to, when I meant to highlight it instead.  I have now changed history to be more clear.   :P

Keeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeris te Waste Management (Phoenix) tourney is this weekend (today through Sunday).    It's the one with the par 3 number 16 with 35,000 fans.    :)

Played 18 this morning.    Really nice.    Got there about 8:30 and the course was pretty empty.    Starter let me go off the back 9.   I had the whole place to myself.     Loved it.    At the turn playin' the front   ....   a little more crowded but certainly within my ability to cope.

Usually 35 and above is OK.    I've payed at 18 on a sunny windless day with supplies.    I joke about it but I really enjoy the walking around.    BTW   The WM announcers are sayin' only 20,000 folks on 16.     Keeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeriste I got that many voices in my head when I play.

When you top the ball like I do you it can get a lot more distance on the fairways.  Which reminds me of a story.

Cousin John and I were playing Twin Lakes, and there's a long hole with North Twin Lake on the right most of the way.  The green is fairly elevated, with a long gentle slope down to the lake, maybe 25-30 yards down.

John hits a ball that landed just right of the green.  We walk up there and are looking all over the place for the ball.  The ground is very frozen.  After a couple of minutes I looked out on the lake, and about 2/3 of the way across on the frozen ice were probably a hundred balls.  I pointed that out to John while suggesting that perhaps his had befallen a similar fate, and he dismissed my comment with contempt.  But, after some time we agreed he should just drop maybe 15 feet from the green where we expected it to be.  He did so, and the ball began, slowly at first but gathering momentum as time passed, to descend towards the pond.  He gave chase but it was too late - the ball reached the pond and, like it was propelled, shot across the wide lake to the other side where it came to a rest among the other hundred balls out there.     :hysterical:

He only then conceded that perhaps my theory held merit.

Tom, I can't believe yunz didn't retrieve the balls.     There had to be a way.    :smh:

I'm headin' to the show tomorrow.    While there, I'll take in some of the instruction stuff but I'm really lookin' for a club.    My set is old and mish/mash.    However, I always liked my 6 iron.    The irons are so old that the head snapped off the 6 on the range one day.   I don't necessarily want another 6.    My problem, I have a 5 wood that is often adequate and a 5 iron that primarily takes up space.    I'm lookin' for something to take me from my 7 iron to my 5 wood (I leave the 3 and 4 irons at home  ...  always.)    I'm thinking about a 6 hybrid or a 9 wood  ....  something in the 30 to 34 degree angle range.     Any suggestions?

7 wood?   I love mine, probably my favorite club.  I can hit straight shots 185-200 off the fairway!  A miracle.

There are days I can't hit 'em off the tee 185 to 200 yards.        I was lookin' online at the stats for some 6 hybrids and 9 woods.    I'll take a look at the sole plates tomorrow on the 7s.

I see a few Callaway Diablo sevens on E-bay.

Oh brother indeed.   In fact, there are a few holes that have creeks at the local public.    Ain't nothin' like skimmin' one across the frozen creek.   :)   My B-i-L lives in Western PA.     I tell him the two best times to drive in NoVA are August and January   ....   like drivin' on asphalt.

Speakin' of which.    Have you ever seen this?

I had not seen that, but have now.  I don't know whether to laugh or cry, but amazing idea.

Went to the show and picked up some Chinese made knock off 25 degree club (low end 7 wood angle).    It looks like a fairway wood and the price was right  ...  $24.99.    I figure what's the worse that can happen.   If it works, great.    If not, I can add it to my collection in the basement  ...   maybe tie up some 'maters.     Caught stage presentation golf tips by Brian Pavlet and Michael Breed.
