I was reading an article that Cousins will likely become the highest paid player in the history of the NFL. I dunno, if I’m the Re@$!ns, maybe it’s not dumb to just walk away from that.

It's not dumb to walk away. They botched this two years ago when, supposedly, Cousins was willing to sign long term to a decent deal. They wanted him to prove it, but once you play under the tag, the built in raises give a qb little incentive to sign for less that the tag. It's taken a few years to play out, but I'd argue that once he played one season under the tag, the Redskins' options shrank to parting with Cousins or drastically overpaying him. We've never seen what a healthy good young quarterback is worth on the open market because no team has been incompetent enough to let it get to this point (the closest was Breese, but his shoulder probably limited how much he got).

I don't hate the trade because I think they should have kept Kirk or because I dislike Smith, I hate it because it seems like they traded long term assets to be mediocre instead of bad in the short term. If they wanted to trade Fuller, I'd prefer they get picks than a QB who probably won't be here the next time the team is good

Watchin' the talking heads on ESPN and they're goin' on about the 'skins.    I bet ol' Rog is crappin' his pants with this at the end of SB week.

Weren't the Chiefs going to cut Smith? Did the Redskins REALLY need to trade for him? And then did they REALLY have to guarantee him 70+ million??? That's ludicrous, I mean honestly that is crazy town.

They would have traded him to someone else. Would not have gotten a third round pick and a player for sure.

Hell, the Steelers could have traded 4 or 5 corners and not missed a one of 'em.     :couch:

Addition by subtraction. Unfortunately they don't have an owner as wise as Danny.  :hysterical:

Cousins, for as good as he has been, is not worth that kind of money. The dude didn't want to be here anymore. It was time to move on from the never ending drama. But I would rather they had tried to draft and develop a QB than go with Alex freaking Smith. As limited as I think Cousins is, Smith is even lower on that scale. And they gave up a 3rd rounder, which should be a player who contributes, and a player who played a position of need, with Breeland hitting free agency, and had shown marked improvement.

Now I can only hope that Smith proves us all wrong and he plays well. :? But I remember in 2012 saying the same thing about Griffin. I thought that was a mistake and hoped he would prove me wrong. :smh:

The trade doesn’t necessarily bother me too much. Giving him the big contract right away, that’s a different matter. Reminds me of the Caps with Jagr. The trade the Caps made was fine—they barely gave up anything. But they rushed to give him the big contract before he did anything at all to earn it. We all know how that turned out. The Smith situation has the potential to be the same.

Do you think another team was going to offer a third round pick and a player for Smith? Who were they bidding against?

Jagr had a track record of excellence.     Smith  ....  not so much.

Jage did have some pretty good team mates.

I don't believe that.

After thinking about it, he must have meant a #2 round.    I mean, even the 'skins couldn't mess up a fourth pick overall  ....   maybe.

Why would Cleveland want a 32 year old QB? Makes no sense. Especially if for just one year. Maybe Denver.

Supposedly the Broncos were offering a king's ransom for Smith, but the Chiefs preferred not to deal within the division.

More Snyder idiocy . Another waste. If all this lunacy were not enough he gives up a third round pick. They love to fleece little Danny Boy.
