The Phillies have so little money committed to salary it makes total sense they signed him. Still plenty of money for Machado next winter.

Will they get into the Hawpah mix?

They are a dark horse but from what I have read they are more likely to go all in for Machado. We shall see.

Orioles announce "Kids Cheer Free" program for April: for any game other than Opening Day, buy one adult upper deck ticket and get up to two kids' tickets free.  You can buy them online but when you add the free kid tickets, it warns: Child tickets are restricted to fans ages 9 and under. Any fan over the age of 9 attempting to use a Child ticket will be denied entry.
so I am gonna guess they are going to print something on the ticket saying KID ONLY or something, to keep the scammers out.

They may be extending into other months depending on how April goes.

Clever marketing move on the part of the O's to help fill up that empty ballpark while creating a new generation of fans.   Upper deck tickets range from $17-27 and will probably be empty most of April anyway.

Harper should expect to get less than that AAV then...

Harper is more than 2 years younger than Altuve. And I’m sure Altuve gave the hometown discount. I still think Harper commands more.

No, the floor for Harper is $30 million (assuming he’s healthy this year)

Altuve is a World Seris Champion.

Harper is a 4 time NLeast Champion who can't stay healthy.  Meh...

I'd trade Royce for Altuve in a heartbeat...

Altuve is great. Absolutely fantastic. But I would bet a significant portion of my net worth that Harper will be the more productive player from today forward.

provided they have comparable health.  I know standard aging curves would suggest the best is yet to come for Bruce, but he's had injury issues 3 of the past 4 years.  You have to weigh that the individual may not age like the average.

Per Buster Olney:

Twins shortstop Jorge Polanco suspended 80 games for a positive PED test, for Stanozolol.

He should ask for a refund, clearly the stuff wasn’t working

Justin Turner will miss 6-10 weeks or more after suffering a broken wrist when HBP.

He’s a Nat killer, but baseball is better when he’s playing. Hopefully he has a full recovery.

ZIPS has Altuve at 5.6 WAR this season, Bryce at 4.7. Altuve has outproduced Bryce 3 out of the past 4 years and has 24 WAR in those 4 years to Bryce's 19.2 WAR.

Of course, the difference is mostly due to health, although I don't know why anyone should expect better health from Bryce in the future than in the past. Altuve is 2 years older, but certainly next offseason probably 27 teams would rather have the roughly 6 years/$160 million left on Altuve's contract than the 12/$400 milllion you're going to pay Bryce. There's a lot of risk in having to pay for Bryce's mid to late-30s to get his late 20s and early 30s, and very little risk on Altuve's deal.

I don't mean to bag on Bryce, and he's certainly been a very good player even when he's not at his MVP level, but I have to say again - everyone is still valuing him based on potential rather than performance. If you want to use new-fangled stats he has one 5-WAR season in his 6 year career. If you want to use old-fashioned stats, he has one 30-HR season and no 100-RBI seasons. He's just an average defender and baserunner who mixes some good flashy things in with enough mistakes to ruin any potential value there.

He's likely going to get the next market-busting A-Rod type deal, but A-Rod had basically had Bryce's single MVP-type season in 3 of 5 years previous to free agency, rather than in one outlier season. Perhaps this will all come into focus this season if Bryce has another ridiculous MVP season and earns his big deal. I certainly hope that happens because it'll be fun to watch.

Won’t need surgery, so that’s good for him.

Bumgarner left today’s game early after being hit by a batted line drive in the hand. ETA: broken hand. No timeline. Biiiig loss for the Giants.

Chris Archer left a minor league game after being hit in the arm with a batted ball too.

Have a friend who told me he was at the game. Could be a long year for the Giants. Apparently Smardzjia is injured also.

Just saw the replay during the golf match sports' news break.    Ouch.    Said he broke the pinkie on the left hand.
