Pirates and Tigers just got postponed, so at least we have a little company in our extended countdown.

Remembering Opening Day 1971

Just laying here remembering how great it was as a youngster  to have my father’s approval to leave school early and go to the game. I also remember our car ride to the game listening to my dad and brother talk about how we/the Senators had NO CHANCE to win versus the great Vida Blue and the Oakland A’s at RFK Stadium that day.
Well, we didn’t just beat the great Vida Blue and those A’s that day - we beat the hell out of them! “8-0”!!! Dick Bosman got the complete game win and Frank “Hondo” Howard had a big hit with a few RBI’s I believe.

That being said, those A’s won the 1971 World Series and Vida Blue went on to win the Cy Young  and League MVP Awards that year.

Sooooooooooo, if the great Max Scherzer loses 8-0 tomorrow, I predict we win the World Series and Scherzer wins the Cy Young and League MVP. ;)

Happy Opening Day eve y’all!

 Let’s go Naaaaaaaaats!!!

They didn't win it until 1972 (though I think Vida won the 1971 AL Cy), but great story nonetheless.

Scraps - I was sitting right behind home plate.  My most vivid memory of that game - bottom first, leading off for the Senators, Toby Harrah, smacks the first pitch from Blue to center for a single.  I hated Harrah up to that point - he was the replacement shortstop for Brinkman which always reminded me of that trade which always made me angry whenever I was reminded of it.  But that single changed my attitude towards him.  Oh by the way, Howard made a couple great catches in left but had no hits.  I remember his quote after the game,"well if you're not going to hit then you have to catch".

For many years Blue was the answer to the trivia question "who was the last switch hitting MVP."

I checked the box score and Howard indeed had 1 hit, 2 RBIs one of which was a sacrifice fly.  No homeruns listed for the game.

It's a very important thread, let's not have one of those last minute things.   :nono:

Somebody who's willing to put in the effort should put a placeholder now and build it right.

Now that is a cool trick trivia question.

Yeah, that was a great Opening Day Ray. I loved Toby Harrah but I also loved Eddie Brinkman. Heck, I loved all our guys back then when there were no expectations. Our lovable losers. 😃

Let’s go Naaaaats!!!

You are correct. Don’t know how I botched that up knowing that World Series was all about  Roberto Clemente and beating those dirty birds from Baltimore.

Go Nats baby!!!
