The Orioles are idiots.  They should be seeking quality prospects, not starting pitchers.  What use are two starters when the team is going to stink without Machado.  And both of those two starters are either going to be free agents after one year, or have expensive contracts; no team is going to give up two starters with favorable team control for one year of Machado.

Says nothing about what the Cubs offered. Kubatko is a shill for the Angelos.

Addison Russell, Albert Almora, and Mike Montgomery were all part of the package the Cubs were offering Baltimore for Manny Machado.

There goes the thoughts we wouldn't get anything of value for Harper if we offered him up.

A dynamic young infielder, a major league ready outfielder and a decent #4 or #5 starter for one year of Machado. Harper would get more IMO.

Russell a year removed from .238, 21 HR, 95 RBI
Almora .298/.338/.445
Montgomery  3.38 ERA, 130 IP, 1.209 WHIP

:lmao:

Russell is a slick fielding, weak hitting shortstop. Maybe he becomes something more, but so far, he hasn't panned out. And they aren't trading him when he's a top 10 prospect. They're trading him after three seasons of established performance. He's a slightly better version of Wilmer Difo. He's not even close to Turner, Correra, Seager, or Simmons.

Almora is a 4th/5th OFer. He's Brian Goodwin. Whoopdeedoo

Montogmery is a spot lefty. So Sammy Solis.

There's no way in hell I'm trading one year of Bryce Harper (in a contender year) for Addison Russel, Brian Goodwin, and Sammy Solis.

I read it to mean they wanted prospects that were starting pitchers, not position players.

So hypothetical, if a team came calling offering that same package or more for Harper would you do it? We all know he is gone anyways.

I'd do it in a heartbeat and replace him by signing JD Martinez.

OF- JD Martinez
IF- Addison Russell
OF- Albert Almora
P- Mike Montgomery

Is 10x better than 1 year of Harper.

JD Martinez!?!?! :lmao:  :hysterical:

Holy crap, it's like some of you just want to settle for kind of good and overpaid. Like somehow getting to 85 wins is awesome or something.

I didn't. Most prospects who are pitchers are starters, at least until they get to the majors. Not many minor league pitchers are relief specialists.

It's not just the 3 guys we get for Harper. It's the addition of JD or whoever else we sign to replace Harper. That has to be factored in.

85 wins?? This is minimum a 90 win team without Harper.

I hate to agree with Slate, but I do not understand the fascination here with Martinez. He is a guy who is going to get a 7 year contract upwards of 200 million dollars even though his defense is already poor and he is entering his age 30 season.
Harper is 4 years younger and better in almost every measurable way. Why make that switch when you are trying to win the world series?

This. We are about the WS. If you want to blow your money on a crappy LFer that you're going to have to move to first base, go get Hosmer.

Totally agree, been arguing this for weeks on here.  JD's contract would be complained about very similarly to the way Jayson Werth's has been in the back half.

Werth doesn't have half of JD's power and was always injured and a liability in OF. JD can move to 1st in 2 years when Zimmerman is gone.

What you are saying applies to Jayson after he came here and aged.  JD will fall victim to Father Time just the same.

Dis-agree. I can't see JD losing his power. His fielding won't matter because he will be at 1B in 2 years.

I see Martinez as the second coming of Jayson Werth.  No thanks...

They're not trading Harper. So this discussion is meaningless.

Here is the actual reporting on MLBTR--as I suspected not all three players. Fake News.

"Interestingly, should trade talks get moving again, Kubatko notes that the Cubs and Orioles discussed a variety of notable names. While there’s no reason to think all three Chicago players would have been included in the same deal, Addison Russell, Albert Almora, and Mike Montgomery all came up in chatter."

Which Washington cap is Harper wearing?

I've found a few similar caps, but no exact match.

It looks like the retro 1924 hat but the "W" is too big
