The Learners should have Boras introduce him at the press conference...

I like the three-year deal with an option. Indicates maybe they've learned something and that it's a long term hire that will bring stability to the position.

Ask me in two years!
Why wouldn't one year be sufficient?  He takes us to the next level, it worked.  He doesn't, it didn't.  Or are you saying he needs to do it twice in order to declare victory.

Should have added another choice "hate the freaking hiring".

Fine with it. As long as he maintains a harmonious clubhouse, I don't think there is too much difference between managers when it comes to managing for nine innings so I don't get jazzed on hires. I like he has experience and will be prepared to handle the grind. I am happier with this hire than I would have been had they hired Cora or a Gardenhire. Experienced but not a retread.

I admit I really liked the Matt Williams hire and then was pretty let down by the Baker hire. On both counts I was proven wrong.

I'm OK wth it. Would have preferred one the WS experience for the opening but we don't spend.

How is Cora a retread?

My thought too, Martinez and Cora actually seem very similar.
I am super psyched for this hire :)

If I were accommodating you, I would've added an option: "Rusty Choker is my father-in-law and I hate everyone"

From what I've read, he seems like a reasonably good choice....the Nats were not apparently going to wave money at Joe G, assuming he would have even entertained becoming the manager...
I hope he is able to instill some baseball fundamentals into some of our boys and have less overall reliance on the home run.
Step One: discourage swinging at bouncing balls in the dirt.
Step Two: see step One.

How is Cora a retread?

I think he means DMart has more experience as a MLB coach than Cora does and isn't a retread like Gardy.

Had they gone out nd hired Ausmus or Porter you would have been screaming about it being a retread hire.

Wasn't my top choice but it is a safe and defensible hire.

Girardi. He won with a good team in 2009 and with a 2017 team that was supposed to be a year or two away.

i'm ambivalent.  He's arguably the best of the available candidates, but i still wonder why  he was passed over so many times before.

I wanted him among the non-Cora candidates, but Long, Girardi, Farrell, and most of the names had an argument or two in their favor.  I find it interesting that they are reportably giving him a 3 year contract.  If that is the case, then he must have had some leverage in the negotiation. It's a step they have not taken before.  It is comparable to what Cora got from Boston.

No I just wanted a hire consistent  with the reasons they fired Baker.
Not Matt Williams the sequel

He's not Matt Williams.  He has been Maddon's bench coach for many years.  Williams did not have that on his resume.  Do you think Maddon would have Matt Williams as his bench coach?

Go check Eddie Matz at ESPN--he says the Lerners have learned from their past mistakes and that the standard is now 3 years.  Even for new managers.  I don't think there was any competition--the Phillies never interviewed him.  And people say the Yankees have other candidates.

Honestly I don’t know enough about the guy to have an opinion either way, but I see a lot of non-Cubs, non-Nats baseball fans getting really excited and optimistic, which makes me get optimistic.

Can anyone explain the difference between Cora and Martinez? It sounds like they’re fairly similar.
