The Nationals announced this afternoon that second baseman Daniel Murphy underwent successful surgery to repair cartilage damage in his right knee. The club said Murphy’s rehabilitation will begin immediately and “progress throughout the offseason.”

Yeah, no kidding.

Also is seems like most of the doom and gloom stories are basketball players.  I’m sure a 6 ft 8 guy who has to run and cut on a court puts an entirely different demand on his knees vs a middle aged guy who jogs around the bases and doesn’t move much at 2d base anyway. 😊

Nothing is ever 100% predictable when it comes to the human body, but I do believe it’s far more likely than not that he is ready for spring training. The timing of the procedure gives him a really good shot at it.

The team did not provide any timetable for Murphy's recovery, other than that his rehab will begin immediately and will progress throughout the offseason.

Justin Turner, who was just named co-MVP of the NLCS, had a similar surgery after the 2013 season and went on to play more than 100 games and bat .340 for the Dodgers the following season.

If Justin Turner played 109 games the season after having this surgery, it seems that Difo will start the season at 2B.

Turner was a utility player for the dodgers in 2014. He was on the opening day roster but didn’t own his starting spot. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.fcgi?id=turneju01&t=b&year=2014. He didn’t really break out till later that year.

A counterexample is Carlos Guillen, who had microfracture surgery in his mid-30s.  He didn't come back until July and was finished after that season.

this does not bode well for Murphy's return....one of the aspects of this type of surgery is some real TLC during rehab....avoiding at all costs, twisting and turning motions under stress...for at least SIX months following surgery. Six months puts him at the near end of ST....and that's just to start warming up! I doubt he will be playing regularly until May.

I don't see any reason to rush/stress Murph being back for ST.  Winning the NL East shouldn't be a 162 game dogfight.  We withstood a host of major injuries last year and won by what, 20 something games?  If he needs to take into May or June before he's 100%, then so be it.  The biggest thing is to be healthy for October.  Everything this team does has to be geared towards October.  Besides, for those that hope Murph is extended and stays in DC, this only makes him more affordable.  I think this moves his market more towards AL teams as mostly a DH as him playing 2B into his mid 30s is more and more of a liability.  That or 1B in the NL.
