Relievers weren’t the problem, not having a reliable third starter was the problem.

We didn't need a 3rd starter at the deadline.  We needed bullpen help and we got it.  Gio had a great year for a 3rd starter.  Starting pitching is the least of this teams problems, however we did go after Sale in the pre-season.  This was not a front office failure - it was a player failure (and manager).

This thread is silly, for the Lerners & Rizzo made great moves to shore up our relief problem halfway through the season.  Let's face it - our problem wasn't needing more players - some players just didn't perform/execute this past week.

Strasburg pitches twice and Scherzer pitched once. Why didn't we win their doiminant games?

Exactly. The offense put up 0 runs in one of those games. hard to win if you score 0, and scoring 0 has nothing to do with the starting pitching.

Having to use our #3 starter as a #2 hurt us.   If Max doesn't hurt his hamstring, the series plays out much differently with only 1 gio start.

Charlie Morton and Gio are pretty comparable, no?

The bullpen gave up 2 runs over the first 4 games. And the bullpen won the game with the non dominant starter. And one inning by a dominant starter is what cost game 5.
The reason the series was lost was inability to score runs. Wade Davis by himself gave up more runs than the entire Nats pen, and I bet you want to get Davis in the off season.

But no more than leaving Trea Turner on the roster.  Stop crying about Werth - he didn't execute worse than many other Nats players.

Trea Turner isn't complete crap, defensively.

Werth most definitely executed worse than every other National

Was referring to games won by the starting pitcher

I'm having problems finding post-season stats on BR for the team.  Is there a better source?  Werth's OBP ended up .322 for the series.  Some of that probably was helped by Game 5, but that probably was 2d highest of any starter, after Taylor.  Doesn't excuse Dusty keeping him  in on D when we had leads like Game 1, but, as bad as Werth played, he was not the biggest dog in the batting order.  He got on.

Are you looking for individual stats or team? Zuckerman had a great breakdown on team stats both batting and pitching on Sunday.

Individual.  I want to see each starter's OBP and OPS.

He had a OBP of .318 for the series. 3 for 18 with 4 walks. MOst of that comes from his last game. Before that, his OBP wasn't even his weight.

He sucked. He was complete and utter crap for four of the five games, missed an easy fly ball, and, frankly, was too freaking slow and noodle armed to play the outfield.

I'm not saying Turner was the MVP or some crap. Or that he was the second coming of Simmons. But he wasn't a complete freak up on both sides of the ball.

He was 3-18 at bat and absurdly abysmal in the field.  Like, played-himself-out-of-a-job-anywhere-next-year bad in the field.  The only player who even came close was Wieters, and he gets a bit more of a pass because it's not like the alternatives to him were really viable (although Lobaton would have at least been better on defense).  Maybe Zimmerman, but one of his hits was critically important.

Which was the same game (okay, one of at least two) he f'ed up in the field, so it was more or less a wash at absolute best.  And I've now heartily agreed with a Slateman post.

No place for Werth.  Time to move on.
