Blame the batters for game 1 and 3

“You can take the Nationals out of the Capital, but you can’t take the Capitals out of the Nationals”

That's disservice to the Caps.  The Caps are postseason studs compared to the Nats.

When team needs a hit, they never get it.

How can anyone blame the batters ?  The Nats were 14 for 38 (.337) ?

Because it’s a five game series and hitting last night was too little too late

Analytics guys will tell you strikeouts aren't bad.  Players know strikeouts are bad.  We strikeout too much.

Umps too.  Blown calls in the first and fifth.

This crap needs to stop.  Whining about umpires is for losers.

I don't understand why the title of this thread is not in CAPS.

Speaking of Caps, I've been following the Caps and their less-than-storied playoff record since 1981 (along with other local sides including the Nats)...so I've pretty much become anaesthetised to the phenomenon of local teams coming up a day late and 77p short in the post-season.

I have to admit that I was kind of numb the whole game. This was my third time seeing them lose a Game 5 at home so I know the drill. The worst thing is losing to those insufferable Cubs fans.

if you know the drill, then you know that you can put in Dodgers or Cards fans, Mets fans, Braves fans, or fans of whatever team does us in.  It could be Diamondback fans in 2018.  Who knows?

When team needs a hit, they never get it.

They need Bryce Harper to get a hit in Game 3... he hit game tying homer.
Then Zimmerman needed to get a hit... he hit 3-run bomb.
They needed Taylor to get hit in game-4.. he hit a grand slam.
They got lots of hits when they needed to in this series... but they came up short that one last time.

This series was lost in game 1. Teams that lose Game 1 lose 5 game series 70% of the time. They had men on in Game 1. They didn't get the clutch hits.

Obviously they got timely hits in 2 and 4, but going back to NLDS '12, the fact is, this team comes up small at the time of greatest need. Lind DP on 1st pitch is classic example.

Who to blame?

Gio for his horrible start?
Scherzer for falling apart after two quick outs?
Turner for running into an easy out at home!
Wieters for his awful defense?
Lind for swinging at the first pitch against a pitcher with no command and GIDP?
Lobaton for getting picked off?
Werth for his poor defense?
...?

I blame Gio, because we needed 5 or 6 innings, and he gave us 3 and almost lost a three run lead.  I also blame Wieters, for his comedy of errors.  ... But mostly I blame myself, because it was "cap day" at work yesterday and I forgot to wear my Nats cap.  So I take full responsibility for jinxing us beyond all hope of victory.

That's awfully presumptuous . . .

Agree with you generally but they only had two hits in game one.

Let's be honest here. If you take away all the lucky runs the Cubs got... the Nats win by at least 3 runs.
The Cubs got lucky last night and they know. Their fans know it. Baez strikes out clean there and they lose the game. Weiters hold onto the passed ball instead of chucking it into RF.. and they lose. Lobaton stays on the base or that stupid replay never gets challenged and they very likely may have rallied there.

Hats off to the Cubs, they won a wild series. there was luck playing into it for both teams (Russell's booted grounder in Gm 4).

The Nats tried hard to fight it, But it was just an extremely unlucky night...

Maybe having Alex Ovechkin and John Wall give the pregame pep talk was a bad idea!

Baseball is an incredible sport.  There's nothing else that compares with the emotions, good and bad, of a playoff game.  You nailed all the lows from last night.
