Lind signed a minor league deal with NYY.

Interesting...

If the Phillies get two of the top arms left, they will challenge us for the division.

First time poster..question: some pretty respected media types think the Phillies will get Jake and possibly one of Lynn/Cobb. Does anyone on here have any thoughts on our chances of getting Jake? Is there any possibility@ payroll reduction to allow this to occur? Assuming possibility of trade with Marlins is dead? Thx for your time.
Don't see the Lerners spending more for such an unknown commodity. Or maybe I just don't want them to.

Media says Philly won't go over 3 years. Even at 30 Million a year, it sounds like Jake doesn't want to go there. The Phillies will be better this season, but they weren't just a Carlos Santana and full season of Rhys Hoskins away. The young kids will get better, but they need guys to break out, and still guys need to break in from the minors. The Phillies are probably right about around getting their "2011 Nats" team, but I would push out that "ready to compete for a WS" until a few more of those hitting prospects really break in. 2020 I feel is a safer bet than 2019 for them, and if you are Jake Arrieta, you want a team that is ready to compete right now, and even with the loss of Harper, has the ability to be back in the thick of at least a wildcard hunt in 2019.

I think it has less to do with how far over the luxury tax threshold the team goes and more about getting the lowest dollar for Arrieta that he will take.

I'm with you...on both counts.  Hard pass...

I think the team needs a long term catcher and another starting pitcher and only has the means in prospects right now to swing a trade for one of those. I think the price for Realmuto will end up being Kieboom, Daniel Johnson, and Fedde by the deadline. I don't think a number 3 starter will come for the same price. I think now it's pertinent to keep Soto and Robles. Let Harper leave and start an outfield in 2020 of Soto, Robles, and Eaton.

I'll take Arrieta if that allows the prospects to be moved for Realmuto. I don't like the chances without getting Arrieta.

I think of Arrieta as I would a Ponzi Scheme.  If it's too good to be true, it probably is.  He just doesn't do it for me.  Like I said, probably mind-fact...or gut-fact...but it is what it is.

Look, if he wants to come on a one year with an option, sure, let's do that. But a month or two last season doesn't make up for two seasons of regression.

I'm in the very leery camp as well.

With all those bedrooms and close proximity to the Park and the bars, I wonder if FP will rent a room from him...

I don't think we can have both Arietta an Montero in camp together.

Although we did bring back Papelbon after he tried to kill Bryce.

Definitely Arrieta. And he wasn't wrong. Arrieta  is horrible about time to home plate.

Well good then...maybe we only brought in Montero to block an Arrieta deal...

Tax write off

Not so much anymore.  I ran my 2016 numbers as if under the new tax law and my state and local taxes got reduced so much that I wouldn't itemize, which means the interest deduction was rendered worthless.

Your mileage may vary.

He ought to have Ray Knight rooming with him.  I hear he loves to party late and he's looking for a change in neighborhood.

A row house huh?
Does that mean we'll  be seeing Mike sitting out on his front stoop on hot summer days?

Maybe the Nats need a four man rotation and bullpen day as the Rays plan?
