Time for Harper to put his money where his mouth is.  Sign Harper for 300, Arietta for 130, but Harper gets a 30 million bonus for every playoff win Arietta gets over the course of his contract.   That sounds like a win/win/win scenario for all parties involved if he gets his wins!

FWIW, I don't think Harper was necessarily pushing the Bats to sign him, I just think he is genuinely surprised Arietta still doesn t have a team

Dickerson would've been a great 4th OF.

Would've done the Liriano deal as well for $4mm.

Thought maybe this could go here:

Yikes. Not a pretty picture.

Rizzo has three drafts to fix that. Might be a gap year or two, but we expected that.

projecting future rotations is such a dumb exercise. these things change extremely rapidly and without rhyme or reason. remember when the mariners were looking loaded with arms?

The Nationals are still eyeing improvements, according to a report from Bob Nightengale of USA Today (via Twitter). In particular, the Washington front office “remain engaged” with the top remaining free agent, starter Jake Arrieta. But it seems that he’s not the sole player of interest, as the organization is said to be “monitor[ing]” the market for possibilities. It is worth noting that several other remaining free agents could fit the Nats rather comfortably on paper, potentially including other starters such as Lance Lynn and Alex Cobb, top reliever Greg Holland, and catcher Jonathan Lucroy. Of course, there’s no real indication whether any of those players are presently seen as options within the Nationals organization.

of those guys, is Lucroy the only guy who will not cost us 2 draft picks and $1MM in the international signing pool?  Did the Rays make Cobb a qualifying offer?

I believe they did. Which is why he hasn't signed anywhere yet either. He's the guy I've wanted. A lefty to replace Gio next season. not sure if the Nats will pull the trigger if they have to give up draft picks.

Players which got QO's: Arrieta, Cain, Cobb, Davis, Holland, Hosmer, Lynn, Moustakas, C. Santana

Does baseball police sign and trades?  The union should not be too annoyed at this point if teams would do sign and trades because it would unfreeze the market.  Would the commissioner block it?

After looking at the list, I am thinking that some of these guys should have accepted the Qualifying offer....

Absolutely. They'll be playing on cheap 1 yr deals at this point.

Rosenthal says he thinks Arieta will have a deal tomorrow, chatter is still the Nats and Phillies.  3/$55 million seems like a no-brainer, especially when we're losing Gio next year and have nobody to replace him in the pipeline.

FWIW, Zuck noted that Martinez told Cole to focus on first pitch strikes today, Cole threw four first-pitch balls in the first inning and needed 19 pitches to get through the frame.

Update: Four straight first-pitch strikes in the 2nd inning for Cole, only hit was on a fly ball that Zuck says Goodwin should have had.

LOL, Arrieta does.

I think at this point, Arrieta makes sense. I know he is overpriced, but I think he is a step up from Lynn and Cobb, and when it all comes down to it, I don't expect the difference in dollars between all of them to be that much. Cobb scares me from a health perspective and that he has the least swing and miss stuff of the three. Lynn has the worst control of the three and has middle of the road K/9. All roads point to Arrieta, even though on the decline, is the best of those three, and will probably be the most valuable of the three over the length of say, a five year deal.

I'll be stunned if Arrietta gets less than a 5 year deal.

I'm gonna got out on a limb and say that Jake is done.  Call it a mindfact if you will, but he's gone downhill pretty quickly...

10.2 IP, 1.35 ERA in last year's playoffs. 13Ks, 10BBs (that walk rate is obviously concerning)

last two months of 2017:  47IP, 2.27 ERA / 47Ks / 15 BBs

I'd take that.
