One of those teaser sites (where you have to pay to read the whole article) is throwing out MAT's name as a possibility for inclusion.

I’d hate to see MAT go, but he’d probably thrive in Florida, given hes from there.

Also, since Wieters was so bad, almost any catcher would represent an improvement. Why not go for options that would be cheaper than Realmuto  like McCann, Avila or Grandal (or even Lucroy)

As for MAT in a Realmuto trade, I think it depends a bit on how confident they are in Robles.  They could definitely get by with a Kendirck / Goodwin

for 6 weeks or so before calling up Robles, so I could see MAT go in a deal.  That said, I would imagine that you could put Antuna or Garcia in  a deal with Kieboom, Severino, and Romero or Crowe and be pretty close  to a deal.  That's a high end international already in the States, an MI who is around the bottom of the top 100, an MLB ready catcher who is no worse than a back up, and a first or second rounder from 2017.

Also, do you think that anytime the Nats pursue a trade that the team just automatically asks for Robles, regardless of who Rizzo is looking to acquire. That seems to be where all negotiations start.

I mean, to a certain extent, yes.

I'm sure when dealing with the Padres, Rizzo asked for a lot more than Turner and Ross

To me, if Rizzo can turn one ceiling type season of Taylor into Realmuto  and not give up Robles, that's totally worth it

Play Eaton in CF and Adams/Kendrick in LF.

High paid (and well rested) backup C, and bat off the bench.

I think that's right, I think he got tired last year and with 2 starts a week he would hit better.

Shame to think we'd have to trade MAT just to compensate for a dreadful Boras deal...

Well, it is also to get a good, cheap player and lock down a key position for 3 years while giving up a player in a position of depth.

Thinking about it negatively

We're cashing in on MAT's ceiling performance to secure a long term, potential all star catcher.

To be fair, if Wieters hadn't come along, we would have hung on to Norris, then had to scramble when he got suspended, so it's not like the catcher situation would have been roses without the USS Wieters.

There's been reports that the Marlins may be willing to deal Realmuto for a package that doesn't include Robbles and Soto.  I'd be fine with any package of prospects minus those 2.

We obviously don't need to upgrade catcher this year to return to the postseason as NL East champs.  However, it could make us more likely to win in the postseason, which is the whole point.  Also, we have to address catcher again next year regardless if we stick with Wieters/Severino this year.  I guess Severio could breakout and start in 2019, but Realmuto would be a cost-effective and solid solution through 2020.

why is it that when I clicked on this link I half expected the rumor to be the Mets are bringing in Domingo Ayala as a quality control / roving instructor.

I'm not sure MAT is that attractive to the Marlins.  He's not controlled long enough for their full rebuild, and he's already entering his prime years.  They would seemingly be hoping he continues last year's breakout and then could be flipped for better prospects than we can currently offer in place of him.  He'd be more of an asset to trade ala Castro.

Still gotta put a team on the field. Might let them not rush a prospect faster than they want to.

I'd be okay with dealing Sato. Obviously not trading Robles and I think Taylor is too valuable as a utility OF at the very least. Offer Sato and a package of lesser prospects and lets go win a ring.

The FA market is slow as molasses. The fish could pick up a decent-but-unremarkable veteran CF on the cheap, sign them for a 2- or 3-year deal, and not rush any of their prospects, not break the bank, and quite possibly get the MLBPA off their back all at the same time. They might still consider MAT if only to turn around and flip him for prospects but now that their #1 goal of dumping money is accomplished, they're going to be focused on restocking that lousy lousy farm.

Don't forget the "pending physical" part.  Depends on the doctor.  Some doctors wouldn't clear him.  (Mine wouldn't.)

If Realmuto can be had for Keiboom and either Fedde or Romero, as I've seen speculated, I'd have to think Rizzo does it in a heartbeat.  If that happens and if Lance Lynn is signed, (2018 luxury tax be damned, I guess), as I've also seen speculated, then I'm pretty exited about this year and beyond.  Lynn as the number five this year sounds nice.

Going into 2019, if Harper is re-signed then Robles or Soto are more expendable and could be made available in trade for a starter to take the role probably vacated by Gio.  If Harper leaves, they have Robles and Soto to hopefully soften the blow of his departure and use the money NOT spent on Harper to replace Gio via free agency...and hopefully have enough left to extend Rendon.  That's a lot to fall into place, but it's a possible path.  And it's a path to NOT making December 2018 the time that the window closed on the Nats.
