Hosmer just mistakenly thought that the new tax law benefitted those in high tax states? Or maybe he went for the Mary Jane?

if my choices are $140 million to live in San Diego or $147 million to live in Kansas City, I'm packing my bags for San Diego

Take the bigger contract, use the savings to buy a place in San Diego, live there during the offseason.

I would easily trade 6.8 percent of my income to trade 6 months of San Diego for six months of Kansas City. That being said, the state income tax burden for someone making 20 million is about another extra 1.6 million per year. I think i would still make that trade.

The chances of the Padres contending in the next 7 years is greater than that of the Royals.

Kansas City's summers are notoriously humid and dreadful. Worse than DC's even. ;)

*The Washington Nationals checked in on Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto, sources said, and the Houston Astros also would figure to be interested in Realmuto as a long-term solution behind the plate. Realmuto, who is under control for three more seasons as opposed to Yelich’s five, is projected to earn $4.2 million in his first year of arbitration, according to MLBTradeRumors.com.

Damn, to the Astros? That wouldn't even be fair. I would have thought another starting pitcher and/or some pen help would have been their move.

I like the idea of Realmuto, but I just see two issues with it
1. Not giving up some key prospects. Guys like Fedde, Robles, and Soto are pretty key right now. Either we expect them to play a major role in the near future (Fedde and Robles), or they are much more ceiling than actual value (Soto in particular, but Fedde and Robles have elements as well). We'd have to give up Soto and some other pieces to even get them to answer the phone. Which is fine, but leads us to ....

2. Matt Wieters' contract. Look, he's a BOras guy. The Lerners are in with Boras. So I highly doubt they're going to let Rizzo trade for Realmuto and give him Wieters' playing time in Wieters' contract year. Boras would become a HUGE PIA, and pretty much force the Nats trade Wieters. And it'll be an issue until it happens. (And also, I'm kind of hoping that Wieters has a huge bounceback in his contract year).

Given that the Marlins are asking a king's ransom, it's clear they are in no rush to trade him. I would hold out until next offseason. This gives the Nats more leverage and ammo for trading. It determines if MAT is a flash in the pants, or can actually produce at last season's levels. The Bryce Harper situation will sort itself. Wieters' contract will be done and we will have had a really good look at Severino. And Fedde and Soto will have continued to progress, thus making themselves more valuable.

Rizzo will probably determine the asking price right now, just in case Wieters is a total failure or gets injured. But honestly, I just can't see that deal happening right now without at least moving Wieters somewhere. Maybe the Marlins take him?

Is weiters tradable? If Rizzo said weiters is available for minor league filler, would any team want him?

HOnestly, no, not unless we were adding something else.  Then again, Rizzo has pulled off more unbalanced deals before.

Maybe they include him in the trade, along with another prospect, and the Marlins take it, gambling on him having a nice comeback?

You'd have to eat a decent amount of that salary to move Wieters. I don't think they'd do that. It *shouldn't* prevent them from making a move for Realmuto if they can pull it off. The Marlins are probably the only team that it might even be possible.

Wieters, a good prospect, a mid level prospect, lots of cash for Realmuto, perhaps? That might not move the needle or it might be too much...IDK.

I'm not going to rack my brains out for a positional player trade.  I do not think the line up needs a positional upgrade to win the division, barring injuries.  There could be some regression from RZ and MAT in particular, but Eaton replacing Werth is a pretty YUGE! upgrade.  If catcher is really a drag, then we can make a mid-season move, especially if Robles is ready.  I don't think a delay in Murphy starting the season is a death blow.

Rizzo should play this passively.  Hold out for high returns if he's asked about a player, be willing to get involved in a 3 way deal if we have a piece that's needed (like Souza was for the Myers deal), but otherwise let's see if Robles is ready in June, let's see if Soto can handle higher level pitching, and let's hope for a dead cat bounce at catcher.  Hold the powder dry in case you need to deal to cover for an injury.  For example, if Rendon goes down, then see what it takes to rent Donaldson.

I would still like to see if we could find a lefty under team control for multiple years who could step in as a #3 starter when Gio goes, and I would not mind a high end bullpen arm if there are some floating around.  That's it, really.  A 5th outfielder RH pinch hitter out of the unsigned when we get to West Palm.  If you think Severino or Difo can be a 5th OF, then you have even more flexibility in that last  bench spot.

Mentioned #Nationals’ interest in #Marlins’ Realmuto in my latest notes column: theathletic.com/202710/2018/01… Team definitely wants to upgrade its catching, but does not want to part with Robles or Soto, sources say. Avila still possible as free agent.

Would that cash count towards the luxury tax threshold?

MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports that the Nationals are among the teams showing interest in Marlins outfielder Christian Yelich.

Washington is also known to have interest in Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto and Frisaro suggests that both Realmuto and Yelich could be acquired in the same "mega package." Miami's new ownership group has expressed a desire to keep Yelich and build around him as a cost-controlled guy who is under contract through 2021 with a club option for 2022, but the 26-year-old is reportedly unhappy about the Marlins' recent fire sale. Around a dozen other teams have checked in on his availability, including the Braves, Padres, White Sox, and Phillies.

Would you trade Robles/ Soto if we got both Yelich and Realmuto?

1. SS Turner
2. CF Yelich
3. RF Harper
4. 1B Zimmerman
5. 2B Murphy
6. 3B Rendon
7. LF Eaton
8. C Realmuto

Bench- Adams, Taylor, Difo

Or flip Taylor for a #3 pitcher?
