Sounds like the Marlins are getting a package for Ozuna that includes 22-year-old RPH Sandy Alcantara, another pitching prospect and a major league outfielder, possibly Grichuk. All rumors though.

Passan says the Marlins want to trade Yelich next.  Nightengale denies it.  He's got something like 4 more years of team control but he'd likely fetch a nice haul in return.

Has someone told the Marlins that they're only allowed to have fire sales after winning the World Series, and that getting rid of Jeffrey Loria (while similar to winning it all in that it is cause for parades) is not actually winning the World Series?

Also, anything that makes the Cardinals better makes my day worse.

You ever show up at an estate sale after the stuff anyone would want is gone, too cheaply, and all they have left is the 20 year old Sony Wega TV that somehow the tube still works, maybe a few paddles with elastics but the red rubber ball somehow has been lost, used socks with holes, and the decedent's yellow leisure suit?  That's the Marlins, especially if they get rid of Yellich and Realmuto (sorry, Justin Bour).

Rizzo confirmed that last month when he met with Boras they discussed extending Harper and also Rendon.

If they start trading young guys with 4 years of very reasonably-priced control...then they don't plan on competing for a LONG time.  How depressing to be a fan of that team.  I grew up an Expos fan, so I can relate to watching my favorite players all be traded away for prospects.

That's like excusing any given political leader's failings with "How would you feel if Robert Mugabe ran the United States?"  Proving someone is not as bad as someone else is not the same as proving someone is good.

Jetes is also under orders to gut the place. What if he was given carte blanche to go add to the payroll rather than subtract from it?

Because no fire sale is complete without releasing a guy: Marlins release Volquez https://twitter.com/clarkspencer/status/941057138084007937

Volquez is recovering from TJ and a knee injury so he is not expected to play till mid season at the earliest.

Considering he's available for the minimum now (Marlins would need to pay the rest), I'd take a punt on him.

Edit:  Wait, never mind.  I didn't have TJ until August.  No way he's an effective starter mid-season, and probably not at all next season (and if not, September at the earliest).

Supposedly under Loria they were running 30-40 million over budget after the Stanton deal. So this is why the firesale happened because the new group overpayed on the front end.

Per Rosenthal, Ian Kinsler traded to Angels. They are trying to set up a team around Trout.

Under a self imposed budget.

I'd be fine with the Rondon's. Hector on an MLB deal and Bruce on a MiLB deal with an ST invite. I think they are better suited to fill in behind Doolittle who I like more than Davis at this point in their careers.

Still think a trade for a starter is in the works. I wouldn't be completely apposed to Arrieta, but paying 150 plus for a number 3 is dumb, and at best anymore he is a number 2 on any other team except for the basement dwellers.

From Heyman’s Twitter

https://twitter.com/jonheyman/status/941142390366142464

Nats aren’t sure they have the money for Arrieta so they’re looking at trades first. Archer, Odorizzi are on their radar. Greinke may be too. Remember, Nats gm Mike Rizzo once agreed to trade for Greinke (Zack invoked no-trade that time)

Per Janes:

Word from multiple people familiar with Nationals’ plans is that they have had serious discussions with multiple right-handed relievers today. Nothing finalized, but seem to be making their push this evening.

Per Rosenthal, Nats sign Kintzler to two year deal pending physical. The law firm is back!

Am I the only one who wasn't too crazy about Kintzler last year? I don't know the $$$ but I would have been just as happy, if not happier with Stammen back. Looking at their 2017s they didn't look too different last season.

I like Kintzler a lot, happy to have him back. Just really really hate the whole “law firm” thing.

I guess he was the right price...

https://twitter.com/chelsea_janes/status/941280002997354496

Kintzler deal is for two years with $10 million guaranteed. Options for both player and club in this deal, not a straight 2yrs at 10M, according to people familiar with it.
