I think everyone had been saying all along that the option was unlikely to be exercised, bc the team wouldn't pay him $5m to be a bench guy.  I don't necessarily agree that a good bench player isn't worth a substantial contract, but I think this was the expected outcome.

Even if he's a bench guy here, if AL teams view him as a mainstay at DH, you can exercise the option then trade him for something.

Uh no.  If you exercise the option he gets $5 million.  He's not likely to get that on the open market.

Wait, you think Lind would get less on the open market?

Yes.  There are about 8 or so 1Bs available.  I don't see him getting $5 million.

Update: am now hearing Matt Wieters exercising 2018 option is not at all a done deal. Nothing official either way, no decision made.

Boras wants to renegotiate.  Thinks he's worth an additional 5 mil or so.

Hey maybe it’s like Subway where the 10th one is free and we’re saving our stamps for Harper. I’d be okay with that.

I don't necessarily want this but I believe the following will happen:

We sign Darvish and Davis. Kintzler walks, Albers returns.

More to come on potential bats soon.

I really want Carlos Santana....but nowhere to play him....unless we try the LF experiment but that leaves MAT without a spot.

In regards to Wieters maybe the Lerners are going to play hardball. They tell Boras that renegotiate the contract or he is on the bench and his career ends in ignominy.

I truly believe that if the Nats get Darvish that puts them realistically in the Otani sweepstakes. Whether he signs this off season or next.

You want Darvish? Why? We already have a play off choker or did you forget?

Cargo to the Nats? McCutchen?

Hearing we trade Trea and Goodwin to the Os for Chris Davis and Manny on a one year rental.

Goodwin alone should get us Machado and Davis.

Anyway, is there any chance the Nats are trying to buy out Wieters? Like 4 million this year and 2 million next? Gotta think he could find a one year deal for ~4 million
