Agreed. This team would have to be completely dismantled to even make the division competitive. We had an awful bullpen most of the year, dealt with injuries to Scherzer and Strasburg, and ran out of outfielders but still got to 97 wins.

The Nats can't blow it up it next year. These playoff performances are embarrassing but they need to again build a team that can win the division and see what happens in October.

The Nats will saddle up and try again next year. Count on that. Beyond that, who knows.

If Scherzer and Strasburg keep rolling next year and Turner and Rendon have good seasons, that is your 2019 core.

I think this team is still stacked going into next season. But 2019 is when it starts getting murky.

hell we win the division even if we trade harper and make no improvements.[...]

Not necessarily - the Mets could be major players in free agency this off-season, with all the salaries they scrubbed this past season. And will the Jeter-lead nouveau regime in Miami hit the ground running on roster development (as it is, the Marlins actually stayed in the wild-card hunt for a while in September)?

Nothing is assured - that's why I really wanted them to win THIS YEAR (see first line of my signature).

we will be the heavy favorites to win the division again, but you are right, nothing is guaranteed.  Injuries can't be predicted.  But this year is over for us, so now the only thing to do is focus on how we can improve next year.  And again, IMHO, our biggest need is a reliable #3 starter that we can count on in the playoffs.  Having Stras and Scherzer, two guys we don't trust, and no reliable #5 that could function in long relief in a playoff game isn't a recipe for playoff success.

FWIW, here's our list of FAs after this season.  I don't see us retaining any of them.  Lind has a mutual option at the end of this year with a $500k buyout, if he stays he gets $5 million.

Werth
Kendrick
Blanton
Perez
Drew
Kintzler
Lobaton
Albers
Jackson
De Aza
Raburn

2018 class is:
Harper
Murphy
Wieters
Gio (team option for $12 million)
Madson
Kelley
Lind

I think you try to get Albers, Kendrick, and Lind back. The rest can wander off somewhere else.

Lind won't stay.  And Kendrick wasn't fully utilized when it counted the most.  Don't see him wanting to return.

I'm tired of regular season "championships."

The obvious need from the free agent market is a top of the line starting pitcher. It's not clear to me that anyone on the FA market fits this description and will be worth the price.

Kendrick had a fantastic regular season in DC and will get a big payday from somebody. That somebody should not be us, as he's not worth the risk that he regresses. Same for Albers.

I can certainly respect the view that Murphy is probably set for a decline and it might make sense to trade him while his value is still high from his 2017 season. One year rentals have not been going for all that much on the market recently though.

So who do you get to replace them? And Lind? And Kintzler?  Probably the bargain basement types as the Lerners only want to spend on the top players. They think the bench guys and bullpen can be filled by anyone.

I don't know. Bench players and relief pitchers are always out there. You can buy a lot of these lotto tickets, invite a lot of people to spring training, etc. It typically doesn't work out as poorly as the early 2017 Nationals.

And we've already got the back end figured out with Madson and Doolittle. Albers will probably be a solid piece again if you can get him back, but he probably won't be as good as he was this year. Kelley will be back and get a chance to have one last quality season, but his elbow or shoulder or arm or whatever it is has probably reached it's expiration date, but he'll get a look. And Glover will be back. He'll be good if he can stay healthy. That remains to be seen. Be regardless, with Madson and Doooooo back, we're already in a better spot going into next season than we were going into this one.

Gio actually strikes me as another candidate for a trade. Forget his Game 5 meltdown: he had a great regular season and pitched well in Game 2 of the NLDS. Nats should certainly see if anyone is convinced by his 2017 stats to trade something valuable for him.

Not opposed to that. But then you'll need 2 starting pitchers this offseason.

A manager with a functioning human brain might convince Kendrick to stay.
