Eaton replaces Werth. That’s an upgrade.  Severino replaces Lobaton. Another upgrade.  We need a solid #3 starter, and a Lind replacement. We’ll win the division again next year but I think we need to bolster the rotation to have a shot at advancing.

Trade Murphy for the #3 SP, use Difo in his place, and try to get Lind/Kendrick to come back and fill out the bench. Add a manager that actually uses their bench well and we'll be sitting there in October again while hopefully winning something.

We're lucky if Ross pitches at all next year. It's probably Fedde or a journeyman next year. Wouldn't mind Fister back though for emergency if he doesn't get a better gig.

Cole was good down the stretch. Ross is a 2 pitch guy and should be a bullpen arm anyways.

Trade Murphy for that guy who bumps Gio down to #4, let Gio/Roark/Cole battle for 4&5, and even look to trade Gio if you can.

I'm gonna miss Howie. He has always been one of my favorite players.
Barely played in the playoffs.

Leroy, we aren’t trading Murphy.   We need to sign an upper level FA starter.  Arietta and Darvish are out there.  Lance Lynn too.

Three guys getting paid like aces? How about our vaunted super scout gm developing one internally

Why not trade Murphy? He'll be 33 next year, his offense is still excellent but the drop this year is likely a sign of decline because of age, and he's a liability on defense. I'm thinking he's the best option to bring in a SP good enough to replace Stras if he leaves after 2019, and we have an in house option in Difo to replace him.

Arrieta is breaking down. His IP and overall numbers have dropped sharply the last couple of years.
Darvish is interesting. He looked fully recovered, but that's going to be a huge bidding war and I'm not sure we win it with the money already sunk into SP.
Lynn seems the most realistic of the FA options. If he's fully recovered, like the 2nd half of the season suggests, I'd be pretty happy to see him picked up and slotted into the #3 SP role.

Like Drew and Heisey before him, he’s an extendable bench guy. Lind, probably not so much.

Arietta: 2.27 ERA over the final two months of the season.

He was barely healthy for September and had a 6.10 ERA. The biggest numbers might be 229, 197.1, 168.1, his IP the last 3 seasons. HR/9 numbers up 3 years in a row. FIP up 3 years in a row. GB% down for the 3rd straight year. HR to flyball percentage up 3 straight years. K/9 numbers down slightly, BB/9 numbers up slightly. Most of the trends are in the wrong direction.

I'm fine with signing him, but he's a #3 SP at most right now and who knows how long that's going to last.

Fedde?

Other than Fedde, there's really not much. They've all been traded away in recent years and the top 30 list on MLB.com had mostly guys from the 2017 draft who haven't played above short season ball.

They should have gone all in and trade for Sonny Gray during the season. Instead the Yanks for him and are in the ALCS. And have a solid starting pitcher for a couple more years.

Could we have gotten him without including Robles?

I have to say that the thought of blowing a wad of what minuscule budget we're likely to have this off-season on any one of those guys is . . .  uninspiring to say the least.

Judging by Rizzo's history, I'll bet he's thinking seven years - $20MM AAV . . .     :?

Probably not. So what. There is no guarantee Robles will be a star.

They would've found another way to lose.

The manager would have left him sitting in the bullpen without a single appearance.

The same Gray that didn't get out of The 4th inning? Yankees are in the ALCS because of their pen

Sign Hosmer to a big deal. Start him in LF. He can move to first when Zim goes on the DL

I'd like the Nats to upgrade the SP. But then I again I say that every year. I have no confidence in anyone beyond Max and Stras.

Even without Harper this team is good enough to win the division. There's simply too much talent to tank.
Agreed. This team would have to be completely dismantled to even make the division competitive. We had an awful bullpen most of the year, dealt with injuries to Scherzer and Strasburg, and ran out of outfielders but still got to 97 wins.

The Nats can't blow it up it next year. These playoff performances are embarrassing but they need to again build a team that can win the division and see what happens in October.
