It’s a really interesting dynamic. I’m not sure the Machado situation changes that much for Royce, simply as there’s only 2 of them at the end of the day and being younger, the analytics will presumably mean the market is way more fluid for both of them.

However, I do think the Nats could put together something like:

2019 25MM
2020 35MM (Face is gone with his buyout)
2021 40MM (Pinch point here for a couple of years as Scherzer’s contract runs down)
2022 40MM with player option
2023 45MM
2024 45MM

That’s 6/230MM and I would be surprised if the Nats didn’t think that was doable. Any further years are hard to work out. 50MM for a 32 year old Harper? Nats aren’t liking that (although who knows what will be going on at that point) but as you say the market is unlikely to be enticing for him so Boras will definitely want more years, probably another 4, which suddenly brings that 400MM into play and at that point you have to have a good long think about it.

Probably right with 10 years and 380 to 400 is probably where Bryce is looking. It will probably have opt outs though, I would guess no less than three.

I believe the biggest issue is that the luxury tax has only been negotiated through 2021. It jumps up to 206M next season (up from 197M this year), and then only escalates to 208M and 210M respectively the next two years.

If players are going to be earning 30M a year more like how they earn 20M a year today, the next CBA agreed tax threshold should reflect that and jump another 20 Mil or so.

Surprise...I would've done the same deal for Tony Watson and Fernando do Abad. Both were struck in the last 12 hours.

Are we even making calls?

Neither of them are worth the luxury tax

It's a problem when midway through the season we need another starter and ownership won't spend because they're paying a 50% luxury tax on the payroll

That can't happen. The team only pays luxury tax on the OVERAGE and they are taxed at 30% this year. That means that if they go over the cap by 40 Million, they are paying 12 Million to tax only.

Okay, 30%. That's 30% ownership doesn t want to pay now.

Well they are already over. My suspicion is that the Nats are reluctant to give up Soto, but would if the Marlins took back Wieters' entire salary in a deal. That puts the Nats back under the threshold by 3 Million or so.

I think the Nats are willing to give up Soto but since they only have one Soto, they’re holding him to see what they need most, deeper into the season: a catcher or a SP or something else. They’re not moving Robles, so that makes Soto the most valuable trading chip. I don’t think they burn it without knowing for sure they’re buying the right thing.

Reasonable take.

I never want to see Benoit throw a pitch for any team I care about.

5 years $110m which I believe was their original offer. I wonder if the Boras juju is finally lifting. He was insisting on $200m for JD.

If he is healthy.

Uh oh ....Boras is getting Harper involved

Trying to drum up some interest for the Nats. Ownership should say, sign an extension and we'll sign Arrieta.

Why? So we have to pay Harper 400 million and Arietta 130?

I think Arrieta isn't getting north of 110 at this point. He should settle for the JZimm deal at best. Philly could still push for something like a 3 year, 90 Million deal.

Time for Harper to put his money where his mouth is.  Sign Harper for 300, Arietta for 130, but Harper gets a 30 million bonus for every playoff win Arietta gets over the course of his contract.   That sounds like a win/win/win scenario for all parties involved if he gets his wins!
