This offseason goes one of two ways:

If we sign Harper to a long-term deal, then go for it in 2018 and beyond. We don't need much in terms of new assets as the roster stands today. Harper, Rendon, Turner are your core offense. Scherzer and Stras are your aces. Roark can hopefully figure it out. Find a couple starters.

If we can't re-sign Harper, we should seriously look at punting on 2018 to be competitive and good in 2019-2020+. It won't happen because of money/appearance, but it could be the best way. Trade Harper - you won't get max value, but at least you get something - and trade Murphy. Trade whatever relievers you want. Energize the farm system through a series of trades and focus on guys who can be here in 2019. It's unrealistic if not impossible, but man, it'd be a ballsy move.

Let Werth walk, try to move Wieters, trade Murphy for pitching, see if Miami will give us something for Gio, and entertain offers for Bryce.

Go into next year with the following projected lineup:
C - Severino
1B - Zim
2B - Turner/Difo
SS - Turner/Difo
3B - Rendon
LF - Harper
CF - Taylor
RF - Eaton

Bench: Backup C, Backup 1B, Sanchez, Goodwin, 5th OF (start Robles in AAA)

SP - Strasburg
SP - Scherzer
SP - Trade for Murphy
SP - Roark
SP - Cole/Fedde

CL - Doolittle
SU - Madson/Glover
Pen - Albers, Romero, Solis, RHP (maybe Ross when healthy), Grace or whoever else is in the system

Trade Harper for Stanton.

Done

Will never happen. Stanton spelled backward is "NotNats."

Move the team back to Montreal.

Eaton replaces Werth. That’s an upgrade.  Severino replaces Lobaton. Another upgrade.  We need a solid #3 starter, and a Lind replacement. We’ll win the division again next year but I think we need to bolster the rotation to have a shot at advancing.

hell we win the division even if we trade harper and make no improvements.

maybe a few patch up jobs at the deadline but nothing comparable to the gains from a harper trade.

hell, with better chemistry we might make it past the first round in that scenario.

Even without Harper this team is good enough to win the division. There's simply too much talent to tank.

In all seriousness, what do you do about Gio?  He'll win you plenty of games in the regular season, and is a key component of the staff, but can you really ever put him on a playoff roster again?

Edited to add:  I think a starter to be our #3 in the post season is the team's biggest need.  We can't expect Max and Stras to carry the entire load.

I remember when Joe Ross was our 3 starter of the future :(. Do we go into next season with the same starting 5? Sign Fister again?

We're lucky if Ross pitches at all next year. It's probably Fedde or a journeyman next year. Wouldn't mind Fister back though for emergency if he doesn't get a better gig.

How about trade Strasburg for Contreras (the catcher) and Quintana from the Cubs? I really like that Contreras kid. Strasburg leaving in a few years anyway.

You could get something for Madson and Gio too.

Sounds like a number 5 who hopefully never pitches in the post season again
