Saturday starter Jeremy Guthrie (2-1, 3.34 ERA) was a victim of one of those collapses. The right-hander took a three-hit shutout into the ninth inning and came within two outs of his first complete game Sunday before getting pulled, and helplessly watched Boston score six runs to beat his team 6-5.

Despite going a career-high 8 1-3 innings and throwing 61 of his 91 pitches for strikes, Guthrie didn't earn a decision in his fourth career start and third this season.

Brian Roberts  tied a career high with four hits Friday to boost his average 16 points to .294. Kevin Millar  went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and is 7-for-12 with two homers and two doubles during his career versus Mike Bacsik  , who will take the mound for Washington on Saturday.

The Nationals said they plan to select Bacsik's contract from Triple-A Columbus so he can start in place of Jason Bergmann , who went on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a swollen pitching elbow. He joins fellow starters John Patterson , Shawn Hill and Jerome Williams on the DL.

Guthrie pitched an amazing game vs Boston in his last start, i think it was more of a fluke than reality. I think we'll hit him relatively hard, hopefully this Bacsik guy is decent.

p.s. Manny needs to make more room for Belly and Nook to get 2-3 starts a week.

Watching the Yankees play against the Mets today is scaring me to death about our starting rotation.

The Yankees lost another starter today, broken finger, and they start a rookie tomorrow.

BTW, they're getting smoked right now, 8-2.

Guys like this usually wind up on one extreme. Let's hope Bacsik has an outing on the positive side of the extreme.

Did anyone notice Sutton refer to the Nats as the Braves?

I'm PO'd. DISH has MASN2 blacked out due to MY20 having the game.....OK. But they also have MASN2 blacked out before the game, so I can't watch Nats Xtra. I started to watch O's Xtra but found my stomach turning too much. Sent MASN and DISH an e-mail; will see if it has an effect.

Edit- Just realized I have to still go out and pick up the hot dogs and rolls for the tailgate tomorrow. Damn, go now while Giant is open, or drive extra miles to find an open supermarket after the game? Conundrum :?

I feel you. I'm supposed to go out to dinner with my sister and her son and my mother but I don't want to miss the game. I may have to step out and listen to it on the radio while I eat. Haven't decided yet.

Whew, we got a break there.  How the hell did the ump think it didn't hit him?

Speaking of omens, my father used to tell me about an omen they used to have back in the days about a pitcher striking out the first batter he faced, he said that whenever that happened the pitcher would not win the game. It was some sort of superstition. It would be interesting to keep up to see how often that happens.

It looked like his view was blocked by the batter's body.

I don't think so but I didn't get to see a replay at the game last night and believed he probably could not make it. However, when I got home and saw the replays I think he could've made it easily.

Tejada is so lucky.

Seems like Bascik not getting at all rattled about coming up to the bigs.

I read the game thread when I got home last night and noticed that Erica had posted from the game and said she was in 320. I just missed her and her boyfriend because I was in 322.

The kid has no velocity...his top out fast ball is like 82 mph...as soon as the O's get their bearings, he's going to get hammered.   :-[

This has been your question for weeks saltydad. Maybe one day your quest will end and you will learn the truth about this mysterious gas. I still have not seen the commercial.

He may keep them off balanced long enough for him to get a cushion.

Remember Mariano Rivera has no speed on his cut fastball, but I'll take him.

I dislike talking on cell phones so I cannot see myself trying to text messages. It would probably take me an entire inning just to type one small message.

Well he's going to have to do it all with movement...cause he's definately not going be blowing anybody away with 79mph pitches.
