2017 League MVPs
« Topic Start: October 03, 2017, 11:36:09 AM »
If anyone's interested in giving your league MVP ballots (1-5 / each league) for a fan vote, I'll tally them after a week or so.  If so, here's mine:

NL:
1. Charlie Blackmon
2. Giancarlo Stanton
3. Joey Votto (I have him and Stanton neck and neck)
4. Nolan Arenado
5. Anthony Rendon  (Hey!  A Nat!)

AL:
1. Aaron Judge
2. Jose Altuve (also very close)
3. Jose Ramirez
4. Francisco Lindor
5. Hosmer / Trout (tie) (Hosmer's 162 vs. Trout's 114, I guess)

No Goldschmidt surprised me, but my own method shakes out how it shakes out.  In fact, I have Kris Bryant 6th and Goldy 7th.  Bryant and Rendon are only separated by the smallest margin.

I have Murphy 12th, Zimmerman 14th and Harper 30th.  Three Reds beat out Harper?  I might need a new calculator.

If it's not Votto or Blackmon in the NL, there is something terribly wrong with the system...

Altuve in the AL has to be a lock...

Look at home road splits for Blackmon and get back to me.

Take a look at Rendon's Division and get back to me...

Stanto hit 59 home runs.  Nice, but not MVP by any stretch.

59 homers and 132 RBIs is definitely MVP worthy

Stanton leads all NL players in bWAR and fWAR (tied with Rendon).  He is second to Votto in wRC+. He also leads the NL and home runs and RBI.

So he leads by traditional metrics and leads by advanced metrics. What more do you want from the guy?

In some other year, sure...not against what he faces this year...

How about an OBP north of .450?

...and playing at a team doing better than 20 games out of the division lead and 10 games out of the wild card. Cannot believe the support Giancarlo 'Cultural Appropriation' Stanozolol is getting for MVP.

Altuve over Judge for me in the AL.  I lean towards a middle infielder whenever it is close.  Judge's HRs are freaky, and his September was so good it saved his second half, but I think Altuve was the best player on the team that was the best in the league for much of the season.  If it is close, I lean to Altuve, but honestly, I may have written off Judge in his cold streak and not seen what a nice overall year he had.

So voting is concluded at season's end. Kinda silly because the postseason IMO should be a relevant factor.

Based on regular season only-my votes:

1. Stanton in NL
2. Altuve in AL

Since we were comparing Stanton and Votto, I am not sure the records of their teams is much of a factor. They were both on very bad teams.
I don't get the "cultural appropriation" thing.
