Outside of a 2 year span with 2 very talented teams 15 years ago he's 6-17 in the postseason. Unless that changes drastically this offseason the answer is no.

Probably ain't many on this board who don't wish they weren't that successful on a "big stage" and not planning a luncheon; or meeting a deadline on when they should buy the new generation of laptops, etc.

Why would you exclude successes?

If they routinely performed poorly under the highest pressure situations of their job would anyone think it was wrong to move on to someone else?

They happened 15 years ago. That is relevant when discussing the future. If someone's biggest success is 1.5 decades ago then it's less relevant than the failures following it.

Sure, if the person you moved on to was more valuable.     Plus, most folks failures aren't on TV every fall.     I'm sure some of us would just love to have our work production broadcast nationwide  ....   after break and lunch.

Or...it just fits your narrative...

You don't know that until you try it. Either you settle for a level or two below the ultimate goal or you thank someone for their time and try another option. I don't think 1 pennant in 22 years, that happened 15 years ago, is worth holding onto without postseason success this year. Get out of the division series and I'm mostly ambivalent to it but won't argue against it. Get to the World Series and it makes sense to continue what is really working. Win it all and he can have a new contract and an ownership stake.

You're right, 2002-03 is far more relevant than 2016-17 when evaluating his performance.

So you're saying we should keep him if we get to the NLCS?

I concur...

Damn, I'm a fan of consensus.    I'm not sure I care about what he did somewhere else.    Take us somewhere we ain't been and I'll take my chances.

Though I would like a parade.

I think the impact of Managers is largely overstated.

Maddon made blunders the last game and also made blunder after blunder last year but was bailed out by his players.

Players win, players lose.

Back to my other question - does Dusty get any credit for last night ?  How about the relief pitcher selection ?

No. The players got it done. They win and lose games.

if he gets any credit, it should be for keeping the players loose, not for strategy.

Dusty was saying before the game that the players were not aggressive enough in their ABs.  I think someone should have gone up to Turner and told him to put Dusty on ignore and then  no one should quote him.

But what about the timing and order of the relief pitchers ?

pulling Gio for Kendrick in the middle of your first rally and down 2 was not a genius move.  albers is with the team to pitch the 6th so no great shakes there.  going to Ollie for a matchup v. lefties, again, that's what he's there for.  The rest was push button.

I'm  not saying he managed poorly or well.  He did the standard moves any manager.  Matt Williams would have made the same moves.  The difference between Williams last night and Dusty is Williams would have had the players feeling extra pressure because it was the win we absolutely needed.  how that impacts the hitters I don't know.

But who knows what he said to Turner.  Being aggressive is far from the whole story and I have heard Dusty articulate it: if a guy is not good with two strikes (and most aren't) you don't want him to get to two strikes so be more aggressive.  A guy who is good with two strikes (Werth, for example) is not someone you tell to be aggressive at the beginning of the at bat.  I imagine that he has these individual discussions with individual players.  I hope he does.  Turner: he isn't particularly good with two strikes, so what do you tell him?
