WHy do college football coaches get state trooper protection

I have never understood why college football coaches always have two state troopers following them around. Who really need the protection are the referees.

I have found that people use security to validate their egos and project importance. Not for actual protective purposes. And college football coaches have some of the biggest egos around.

You also see this phenomenon with low level politicians who carry security details. Security details just draw attention. For all but the most recognizable people, it may be less secure not to have one.

For visiting coaches it seems a courtesy.  Think about going into Morgantown and having empty whiskey bottles whizzing past your head, it can be difficult to focus on that 3rd and 5 call if you don't have some sort of protective cocoon.

The Auburn football team stayed in my hotel in Greenville, SC last night.  The place was crawling with cops and private security.

A lot of the coaches are the highest paid state "official".    Gotta protect the investment.    IIRC  Bear Bryant had AL troopers with him at all games.

Agreed...was mostly responding to the "courtesy" angle...they bring their own Troopers...

Alabama has position coaches making more than the school president, they really need a whole bunch more troopers

I think the troopers with the ranger hats escorting coaches after the game for the handshake is one of the iconic images of college football, and I hope they keep those troopers even if they no longer serve any actual protective purpose.

Also, DC teams in multiple sports share a division with Philadelphia and DC fans are asking why coaches might sometimes need police protection?
