Rendon or Murphy for MVP
« Topic Start: September 05, 2017, 03:18:23 PM »
All the talk is about Rendon being in the mix for MVP. I can buy into that easily but I question why no love for Murphy?. His RISP is .419 compared to Rendons .381 and his overall BA is about 10 points higher.  ,If it solely based on defensive metrics than I could agree as Rendon is clearly the better fielder. Just thought I would get the conversation started.

Murphy is too consistent to be MVP.

Rendon is currently 3 wins better than Murphy 6.5 vs. 3.5 (fWAR). That is a significant difference. A lot of this difference is due to defensive ability, but not all of it. Rendon has a higher wRC+, which means more runs created (144 vs 133, 100 is average), a higher OPS (.948 vs .922), and higher isolated power (.240 vs .225). His BB/K ratio is higher than Murphy's (0.96 vs. 0.67).  Baserunning (BsR, which is a stat that combines stolen bases, CS, taking extra bases, etc.) for Rendon is 3.4 vs -1.1 for Murphy.

Murphy has a higher BA (.318 vs .304).

Rendon gets on base more, has better plate discipline, hits slightly better for power and creates more runs and is a better baserunner and a much better fielder.

Those three wins represent a huge amount of difference.

Oh, I think that Rendon has zero change of winning the award, but this is why he is a better candidate than Murphy. I personally think that Goldschmidt will win it assuming this thing with his elbow isn't serious. If not him, I think Stanton, especially if he hits 60 HR.

Coors Field...

They seem to think he is Superman at the hot corner too.  I can't figure it out, but...

Yep. Had we been hitting Rendon in the two home where he belongs, it would be a different situation

I personally would rather the Nats players win the WS than individual accolades.

They are not mutually exclusive.  See: Bryant, Kris and Posey, Buster.

Who is "they?"

As far as 3Bs go, here's the defensive runs saved numbers: Nolan (20), Gyorko (16), Longoria (13), Frazier (10), Tony (8 ), Manny (7)

Amazing the seasons we've seen from Rendon, Murph, Harper before injury, Zim, Max, Gio, and Stras (DL stint aside).  True star power.  4 of the very best hitting seasons and 3 of the best pitching seasons.

I'm fine if Stanton wins it. He's having a great power-hitting year. It is fun to watch.

Yabut it had been like a quarter century before Posey.

Arenado is great at 3B. Metrics and eyes should agree there.

If the Rockies make the postseason I think it'll be Nado. But, if Stanton somehow breaks the record...it's his no matter what.

What record? I doubt he catches even Sosa's 63.

At this point, like someone else pointed out, even Stanton's "record" can be questioned.

Do we now presume the record unattainable by honest means?

If Stanton gets to 60, I think they'll vote him the MVP. People are impressed by dingers.

Maris's 61. The only one that counts in a lot of people's mind.
