I have to say, the article quoting Rizzo about trying to sell the Nats on the city and team success despite only having 300k left to spend is one of the most pathetic things I have read in a long time.
300k is the limit for the signing bonus right?  The most teams have is 3 million.  Is that really going to factor into where he goes?

300 K is the limit that the Nats can spend on one player because they went over the limit the last two years. The most any one team can spend on a single player is 3.5 million. I don't think that's going to be a significant factor in his decision.

What exactly did he say?

Yeah, the whole article came across an an obvious PR puff piece. No journalism involved. It read like the Nats wrote the article and it was published verbatim.

Japanese embassy is in DC.  That HAS to be the winning argument.

But what can the Nationals offer him on the offensive side of the ball? At-bats during his regular starts, and pinch-hitting opportunities on off-days? I'm sure there's an AL club or two who can offer him the chance to compete for starts at DH.

I still think he ends up in the American League.

yabut Washington chopped down a cherry tree, so I'm sure that balances out any plus from the Festival.

Apparently, all 30 teams submitted the paperwork Ohtani demanded of bidders.

Oakland's likely detailed their plans to trade him for prospects once he reaches arbitration.

I think at some point he has to choose one path or the other (pitcher or batter).  Even the great Babe had to choose.

He's a supremely confident young man who is literally giving up tens of millions of dollars because he is in a rush to prove that he can be the next Babe Ruth. While I am confident that he will eventually have to pick one or the other, he will need some amount of humbling before it comes to that. That humbling will only come when he faces MLB pitchers and hitters, not when 30 teams grovel for his (significantly underpriced) services.

For now, I can't imagine him picking an NL team. It would put a ceiling on what he could accomplish. Anyone else recall being that age?

But even if he is the Next Babe Ruth, surely he understands that even Ruth had to pick one path or the other.  Or does he think he's better than Ruth?

I have no idea if he's even heard of Babe Ruth. But he has repeatedly said he wants to regularly both pitch and hit. In Japan he appeared as a batter in 104 games in 2016, an average of 3.7 plate appearances per game. He is hoping to pull off the same feat in MLB and an American League team offers him a better shot at doing it because they can put him in at DH on off-days.

If he is to be a starter, no way you give him 500 at bats to injure himself running the bases and fouling off pitches. NL makes more sense to me, gets a chance to hit every 5th day and could be a huge PH weapon if used correctly. Otherwise he would have to ditch pitching or maybe relief only, which wouldn't really be worth it if he has arm issues that impact his viability as a everyday position player.

I'd let him play the outfield and then come in in relief in the end of games. I don't think you'd want to waste his pitching talent as a closer, but if he is an above average batter, then I believe that that would be the way to maximize his value in the National league.

He has the leverage to demand it. If I’m him, given that money is off the table, I’m looking for guarantees in writing about being on an mlb roster and playing both ways
