Cole to Bull Pen ??
« Topic Start: August 28, 2017, 03:05:59 PM »
I have way too much time on my hands today but this subject has been nagging at me for sometime. Cole cannot throw effectively for more than four innings. Why do we keep trotting him out there as a starter. This screams for a change to the BP next year. He does walk too many to be put in high stress situations. Or just trade him for whatever we can get.

I totally agree with this. I've brought it up before. AJ Cole is pretty good in his first 25 pitches or so.

For his career, in their first plate appearance against Cole, opponents are hitting .264/.355   /.396. In their second, .320/.388/.544

This season is even more pronounced. First 25 pitches: .211/.375/.263; Pitches 26-50: .360/.467/.400

I can see making this move, although they might be holding out hope for him to develop more as a starter.  We don't have other guys ready to step into the rotation within the organization, so unless we pick up some depth/insurance in 2018, I think he has a similar role again.  They might use him as a long man with the big club and then stretch him out if needed to plug into the rotation to cover DL guys.

I don't want him starting a post season game, so this would make me happy assuming they do it now and give him some time to acclimate

Why would he be starting a post season game?

The only scenario where Cole starts a postseason game is if we lose 2 starters.  Right now he's #6 in the pecking order.  We might even use Max on 3 days rest before using Cole as the 4th guy.

Because our rotation isn't exactly a picture of health

Everybody is back right now.  Gio, Roark, and Edwin have been fine all year.  Max isn't missing the postseason for a stiff neck.  The only guy that is dicey is Stasburg, in which case Jackson would start.

Cole was starting this year because of the lack of depth at starter.  Fedde was hoped to be the new #6, but he was a project at the start of the year, and of course Guthrie . . . retired.   The only other starters beyond the regular 4, Ross/Jackson, Fedde and Cole were Turner, Guthrie, and Grace in a spot.

Look, honestly, for Cole to be starting a playoff game, We'd have to lose two starting pitchers. Unless none of those pitchers is Scherzer and Strasburg, I would assume that we're basically punting the post season. Or I'd only expect once through the order with Cole.

Why not just use Jackson in that role? I'd be more comfortable with him in all honesty than Cole.

Because Jackson is pretty terrible in relief, particularly in the first inning.
