Near where my grandma lived in Philly, you had Allied Chemical, a slaugterhouse and a chocolate factory all close by.  I can still remember the smell.

We had the steel mills (of course), oil refinery, hazardous waste incinerator and a nuclear power plant.   The nuclear power plant didn't stink a bit.    It was the glow   ....
