That cracked me up Ali.

To be fair, he did play in a World Cup for the U.S.  And they impressively managed to spell both his first and last names incorrectly, but who cares?

Correct Icelandic spelling would be three times as long with strange punctuation.  Poor kid though.

As an aside, I'll bet Sigurdsson wins the Golden Ball in Russia.

So one of the excuses for no relegation in the MLS is that cities invest in soccer specific stadiums and need a top tier team to justify the investment. Nice to see them looking out for municipal investments

https://deadspin.com/columbus-crew-welcome-to-the-stadium-extortion-racket-1819608903

sports owners really are some of the worst people in this country

nashville just announced plans for an MLS stadium as part of their pitch for expansion. it's part of a larger transit plan (announced today) that would also add a ton of mixed-use buildings, soccer fields and (of course) a transit hub in a developing area (where I just bought a house!)

the stadium deal didn't seem like a "city gets freaked" deal because the mayor here needs support for the transit plan and announcing a ridiculous stadium deal (like Vegas) would crush her

Who cares about relegation? Seriously, that's such a lame excuse for a terrible product. We have 4 of the top sport leagues internationally here in the US, and none have relegation. Copying some stupid model, simply because other soccer leagues do it, only hurts the chance to grow the sport here.

Most American leagues are loaded with teams tanking for picks. Most sports leagues have locations based on what cities were large 75 years ago with people screaming when they relocate to reflect current reality or expand and dilute the product. Our leagues are great if stasis is the goal- if you own the browns or pirates or magic, it’s ok to suck, you’ll still get revenue sharing and there’s no danger of a better team rising up and taking your spot in the league

No relegation allows teams to not even try to be competitive.

Eliminate a salary cap should be the next move the MLS makes. Get rid of the draft and salary cap and let teams that want to invest invest.

We went to the finale at RFK today, it was my first time attending a MLS game.  The game itself was fun.  The crowd, well at least the NY Red Bulls cheering section, got out of control toward the end of the game.  They were lighting red sparklers, and at one point lost control of one and tossed it over the railing.  Fortunately it landed harmlessly in an open area behind the old 3rd base dugout.  We were in 311, under the overhang behind the 1st base dugout.  When the DC United player got a red card people started tossing beers down from the 400/500 sections onto 211/111.  I guess this is standard "soccer hooligan" behavior, but it will definitely make me think twice before attending another game.  Maybe things will be better at the new park?

I'd also add "good riddance" to RFK.   The stadium looks like something that should be in Cuba or another underdeveloped part of the world, not in our nation's capital.  Lines for everything today were insane with only an announced attendance of 41k (and most of the upper deck was empty).

Not sure if it's universal practice in the Premier League, but at Chelsea you can't drink in the stands - you can get a beer (except at UEFA Champions League matches which are dry) but you have to drink it on the concourse.

I was at the farewell match yesterday too - good to get in there one last time. I'll miss watching the Diplomats, DC United and the Freedom there (along with, of course, the return of baseball with the '05 Overachievers and my first-ever baseball game in 1963). It wasn't the most aesthetic place but it was accessible, had good beer (massive cans of Heineken sold in the stands yesterday) and definitely had its moments.

Heineken?  That's new.  I've had many of the 24 ounce Modelos and Coronas at RFK.  I kind of doubt the $10 vat of Modelo will be available at Audi Field.

Really? It certainly was ubiquitous yesterday (full disclosure: this was my first visit to RFK in seven years).

Well, this was the first game in RFK for years in which the upper deck has even been open, so it's a rare event these days. The architecture of the new park will probably make the throwing of beers from above be less of a thing, but the tradition in the hardcore supporters' sections has always been to throw beers in the air when DCU scores.  As for the sparklers/smoke, it's been years since I saw that inside the stadium, and I have to say I loved it (though not the dropping of one out of the upper deck, which I saw too).  The atmosphere is usually a bit more intense at MetroStars matches (no matter what they call that team now, it's always the MetroStars, just like calling them "New York" doesn't magically move their stadium in from Jersey).

RFK yesterday was the best it's been in years.  As for the lines, that's mostly because they only open a minority of the concession stands, etc. for DCU games.  But then again, when RFK was built, people didn't treat sporting events as simply one more in their long list of daily activities that come with a side of gluttony.

New place will certainly be different, but I'm not sure I've ever seen much better than RFK when it's full and the fans are engaged (and I've been to a few of the big clubs in Europe).

It's definitely been around the last 2-3 years.  Don't remember when it started.

Universal, and not just the Premier League.  The lower leagues in England are the same.

Explains the violence.  DTs.

I went to a game at Highbury in the 80s.  Scary as all hell.

Anyone offer some first-hand insight in the new United stadium (Audi???).  How's it look?  How's the area around it?

Went to Philly for a match and the stadium was great but the surrounding area was a mess....

Having grown up in Philly we all knew to stay away from Chester. Oy slightly less scary than Camden. Hard for me to believe they put a stadium there.

It really had an old shipyard feel to it.

We were actually treated will by the Philly fans even though we went there rooting for the Sounders.

Of course you were!l treated well!

Where did you eat?  Really not sure what type restaurants are right around there or nearby. It's really not that far from Pat's Steaks and Ginos. Melrose Diner? Glad you had fun.

We did have a great time.  We ate at the stadium - it had a bunch of good selections (like Nats Park) centered around venues local to Philly.  I had lunch at "The Q".

The area around the stadium was blighted with no food offered.  It was largely parking lots and run-down homes.  The casino was about a mile away.

the construction was visible from the 1st base line ramps at Nats Park.  It's only a couple blocks from Nats Park across South Capitol.  More pre-existing residential, it looks like, but I think the plans call for retail around the Stadium.  If only JD Land would stop by . . .

Why does the MLS take 2 1/2 weeks between rounds of the playoffs?  Is this normal or is for the World Cup?

It's an international break.  World Cup qualifying, for those teams still having games to play, plus friendlies for others.  The European leagues are also on hiatus.

Why would the US league need time off for world cup qualifying?  Are many Mexicans, Hondurans, Costa Ricans, and Panamanians in the MLS playoffs?

There are a few players out there (most didn't make it this far int he playoffs though).  Plus, isn't Argentina and Brazil in the World Cup?  There are a bunch of players in the MLS from Argentina.
