What do you call the United players? Like if you join the DC baseball team, you’re a national, and if you join the hockey team you’re a capital. What’s the soccer equivalent?

I'm reminded of this guy   ....   Johan Cruyff.    I know Cruyff fueled interest in the Dips.    I bought season tickets because of his signing.    Even at his age, he was head and shoulders (skills wise) above anyone on the Dips.     The United has a new stadium and fans will go see Rooney  ....  It'll stoke casual fans to pay attention to United, even if it's only for a summer.

I'd love to see Rooney come here and play.  I'm an Everton supporter and even if they're aging stars it helps to have these guys come and play here.

I first paid closer attention to Everton when they had Tim Howard in goal.     Of course, Rooney's been on the radar "forever".    I'd certainly take a trip down to watch Rooney.

Can't wait to see him struggling in the DC summer heat and then getting heckled by the Hispanic fans

I'm gonna catch a game.    Hope I can avoid the drum and flag section.    Looked at the new digs from Nats' Park last Thursday.    Lookin' good.    Tryin' to figure what my plan of attack will be.

Though I hope Rooney plays well for D.C., I fear he will be underwhelming. His drop off over the last 2 seasons has been pretty evident. He’s still got that vision for a pass and shot and no doubt will pull off the odd outrageous bit of skill, but he won’t be the bustling ball of rage from his prime. With any luck, he won’t need to be.

I hope he’s up for it more than Gerrard and Lampard were.

Regardless of the drop off, he will be an improvement over what we have.

I suppose he’ll need a set of grafters that can do the leg work and get him the ball in places he can damage.

The temptation will be to let him drop deep and hit his long passes, which he can do but probably isn’t the best use of him, in my opinion.

The flaw in those plans is that they need to have possession.

He’ll spend a lot of time suspended if he needs to win possession as well!

Some familiar names to come up.

I see Crystal Palace finished 11. Not bad after a disastrous start. Also Leicester City has established itself as a solid top level team.

And out of the Football League altogether and into the National League*: Chesterfield (after 97 years) and Barnet (after three seasons).

Coming back to the Football League: Macclesfield Town (after six-season absence) and either Sutton United (Football League debut) or Tranmere Rovers (after three-season absence).

Meanwhile, the Washington Spirit (the area's fourth attempt at a women's pro soccer club since the turn of the century) will be playing Audi Field on 25th August at 19.00 vs Portland Thorns. A lot easier to get to than their regular home, the out-in-the-middle-of-nowhere Maryland Soccerplex. - I may check this out (I was a STH at the WUSA Washington Freedom all three seasons).

*You read that right: National League (formerly the Conference or Conference National). I guess that's what they do with relegated League Two clubs now - turn them into baseball clubs.

I love World Cup soccer, even went to South Africa in 2010(still have my vuvuzela), but my interest in it for this year is definitely down. Combination of USA and some regular powerhouses(Italy, Netherlands)not being in it, and the fact that corrupt ass Russia is hosting it....I mean I'll still watch but not with the same fervor as in years past.
